International Course of Fundamental Neuroscience and Neurogenetics

Financial support: International Brain Research Organization (IBRO short course), Universidad Nacional de
Misiones, Posadas Municipality.
Local and dates: Facultad de Ciencias Exactas, Qumicas y Naturales (National University of Misiones,
Universidad Nacional de Misiones, UNaM), from May 15th to May 19th, 2017. Address: Flix de Azara
1552, 1st floor, Posadas, Misiones, Argentina.
Topics included:
Fundamental concepts of Neuroanatomy, cellular neurobiology, embryology and adult neurogenesis,
pharmacology, neuroethology, Memory, Diseases of the Central Nervous system, Behavioral genetics, and
epigenetics.
Workshops: EthoWatcher, How to communicate science, Experimental Models in
Neuroscience, 3R in animal experimentation.
Activity Meeting the scientist.
Lectures: Lectures will be dictated in Spanish and/or Portuguese (Brazilian).
Lecturer Professors: from Brazil, Paraguay, Costa Rica and Argentina.
Workshops: There will be activities such as demonstrations, simulations, discussions, and preparation of
seminaries. Detailed information about workshops will be sent to attendees after confirmation of the inscription.
Meeting the scientists: small groups of attendees will meet the scientists that are teaching the course for an
informal conversation about science, teaching, career, research opportunities and life experiences.
Happy hour and Special Dinner: The dinner is going to take place in the middle of the course to promote the
interchange of information between the students and lecturers from the first and second half of the course.
Young Students Communications: Before the course, those students awarded the grant will receive a
scientific research article related to a novel topic of neuroscience, mainly authored by the lecturers of the course.
Along the first half of the course, these students will be encouraged to train and prepare a presentation to give
a small talk at the end of the course. The presentation will be prepared during the Workshop How to
communicate science. On Thursday, these students will be able to present the oral presentations.

Individual registration terms and conditions:


Registration and participation of the course and workshops will be totality FREE OF CHARGE. Due to the
limited physical space, a selection process will be carried out for interested candidates.
The requirements for participation will be as follows:
Graduated or attending the Bachelor's Degree in Genetics, Biology, Pharmacy, Biochemistry,
Medicine, Veterinary Medicine, Psychology or careers in related areas.
Basic knowledge of Portuguese and Spanish is required (the course will be dictated in both
languages).
A letter of interest (in English, Portuguese or Spanish, tops 1 page) will be required explaining the
academic or professional relevance of this course for the candidate.
The student agrees to participate and attend 80% of the course to obtain the certificate of attendance
and approval.

The possibility of applying for scholarships for travel, food, and accommodations for students residing outside
the province of Misiones.

Scholarships:
Because of the limited number of places, a selective process will be carried out between the candidates, which
will require the following conditions:
Meet the general registration requirements
A letter of justification (in English, Portuguese or Spanish, maximum 1 page) indicating the expected
impact of participation in the course and justification for the need to receive financial support.
A letter of reference from the supervisor (in English) or a competent authority.
Curriculum vitae (CV) of the candidate (in English, Spanish or Portuguese) including subjects,
courses, conferences, abstracts of congresses and scientific articles published in the area of interest of
the course of a maximum of 2 pages.
Attached to the CV, a proof of regular student (in case of students)
Basic English skills (reading and comprehension).
At the time of registration, the candidate must choose and participate in one of the workshops offered
The selected candidates will have to give a brief oral presentation (5 min) about a scientific article
chosen by the scientific commission.
It will require a commitment to attend 100% of the academic activities.

The scholarship offered will cover:


Travel grant: offered as retroactive upon arrival at the event
Housing: granted by the National University of Misiones and the Municipality of Posadas, which will
cover the stay during the days of development of the course.
Meals: The selected students will receive a food voucher for the UNaM university dining room,
consisting of one lunch and one dinner per day.
Additional expenses will be exclusive the responsibility of the selected candidate.
The evaluation and selection of the candidates will be carried out by the scientific commission with
the assistance of experts in the area. The results will be communicated on April 8th in the official web
page.
