DESIGN ABSTRACT
A place focusing on composition, performance and learning of music, which
seeks the revival of the folk music of different regions of India in a way which
would make folk music more interpretable to the current generation of music
consumers.

As we know, India needs more institutes dedicated to music. Folk musicians

living in different regions of India are earning very less through their music and it
has become mandatory for them to look for another source of income. A lot of
musicians living in Delhi also need a place where they can interact with other
musicians, collaborate and exchange playing styles with each other, offer
something new to the current popular music, get known, build a fan base, and
make money out of their jam sessions. They will also be paid to occasionally
interact with the students and give expert advice on their work. While going after
the futuristic sounds and music forms is the need of the day, we also need to go
back to the traditional forms of music, and present them in a new way. Ive
chosen folk music because its simplicity makes it very versatile.

The following functions would be there

The Institution area where the rules and techniques of folk music will be
taught using the terminology which can be applied to any form/genre of
western music, so that the students are easily able to break the
boundaries between different genres, without learning a new set of
terminologies every time.

A jamming studio for the students and teachers of the institute, folk
musicians, local bands of Delhi, and anyone who has an understanding of
music and is willing to jam. Through these fusion jam sessions, students
will learn more about musicianship, current styles of music, and the
versatility of folk music. This region will be dedicated only to music and
will be open to all.

A concert hall for presenting what the students have learned/created

fusing the elements of folk and western music, to an audience. The
impromptu compositions made in the jam sessions will be performed too,
and the artists involved will be called. Entry tickets would be levied for
accessing this area. This concert hall would also be a venue for the
performance of artists outside the institute.

A rehearsal area

An exhibit area with a library.

I do not want the programme to be a single block of mass with windows, rather
be a collection of snippets working together as a whole. Between the built forms,
there would be intermediate spaces containing elements creating a variety of
experiential inside outside spaces and surprise elements. . Rehearsal and
jamming would not be limited to the spaces which are labeled as rehearsal and
jamming space, but would also be happening in these intermediate experiential
spaces.
