The D uty Of The Sons Of H ea v e n

The Duty of a son of heaven isto protect and defend the innocent, the weak,
the poor and vulnerable, and to protect righteousness with their own life,if
necessary

Between Earth And Heaven he maintains harmony in the universe. Although

his face changes, his role remains. He m odels the heaven and the earth and
observes the m easures of the former sages.

Educating the people,he m akes practice to become habit so that people will
e mbody upright customs.

Uniting the people,he lets them understand his intentions before leading
them so they willbe united and m entally prepared.

He publicly rewards the Good to promote Virtue, and publicly punishes

wrongdoing to terrify the evil.
The 3 Greats

Delegating power and responsibility he established the Great Order.

Transforming the crooked into straight he establishes the Great Settlement.
Transforming and rectifying him Self as an exa mple he suffers the Great Loss.

Behaving with high m orals to set an exa mple for others, being filialand caring
for others to have a good reputation, keeping his promises and being
righteous so he isable to m ake m ore friends, loving and forgiving so that he
can be accomadating to m any people... These are the ways the Son of
Heaven establishes his o wn mighty virtue.
According W ith H e av e nly Principles

To achieve success in anything, your actions m ust accord with Heaven's

M andate, m orals and the seasons of Heaven and Earth.

The W ay isho w things should actually be done. Itisthe way you can return to
the foundation and return to the beginning.

Righteousness isethicalbehavior. Itisthe m eans by w hich to achieve great

things.

Strategy isthe way to keep harm away and gain benefits.

Principles are the way to preserve duty and keep achieve ments.

Ifyour behavior doesn't accord with the Way and righteousness, but dwells in
m agnificence and enjoys power, disaster willfind you in the end.

So the Tian Zi runs things according to the Way, manages things with
righteousness, orders people with propriety and leads with kindness.
Cultivate these 4 virtues and you willflourish. Neglecting them willlead to
your decline.
According W ith The Chan g e Of Seasons

The nature of Spring isbirth. The thousand things begin to flourish.

The nature of Su m mer isgrowth. The thousand things begin to mature.
The nature of Autu mn isgathering. The thousand things are full.
The nature of Winter isstoring away. The Thousand things are still.

The Son of Heaven accords with the seasons and m odels things based upon
them. W hen things are wellordered, his kindness and wisdo m are not seen.
W hen there isconflict, his kindness and wisdo m willflourish.

W hen one isliving in peace, one should think of the danger that islurking,
m ake preparation for itor prevent itfrom happening.

The M a n u al Of H e a v e n

The m i n d m u st e m b o d y kindness an d actions should incorporate

righteousness. R elying o n the nature of things is wisdo m. R elying o n the
great is courage. R elying o n long ter m relationships leads to g o o d faith
Bringing har m o nious results.

The greatest harm that can befallyou isthe resultof fear, hesitation and to
m uch doubt.

Ifyou pick up a knife, you m ust cut. Ifyou hold a weapon, you m ust attack.

On the battlefield, soon to become a land of corpses, ifthe soldiers are

com mitted to fighting to death they willlive, but ifthey want to stay alive
they willdie.

A son of heaven willlive as ifthey are in a sinking boat or trapped in a

burning building.
Being com mitted to living and being com mitted to staying alive are not
comparable. Casting off alldoubts, fervently and determined, they go forth
decisively.

The soft can counter the hard. The weak can counter the strong. Being soft
can be a virtue. Being to hard can be a m enace. The weak isw hat people will
help. Those w ho pretend to be strong are w hat people resent. Soft Hard,
W eak, Strong each have their specific place and you should combine these 4
and use them w here m ost appropriate

Everyone wants po wer but those w ho are capable of using softness and
weakness correctly are rare.

Ifyou can use soft and hard, your future willbe bright. Ifyou can be weak
and strong you willbe m ore and m ore prosperous. Ifpurely soft or weak you
willdecline. Ifpurely hard and strong you willbe destroyed.
The Son of Heaven should exhibita weak front but great power underneath.

Success depends on timing, ability to grab the opportunity, being able to plan

ahead, and decisiveness.

In general there are those w ho gain success through the Way, Those w ho gain
success through A weso meness and those w ho gain success through strength.

Tian Zi willfollow w hat the W ay depicts.

The capable willfollow the naturalprinciples.
The wise willuse w hat past saints and the capable have done for himself.
A haughty person willfailfor sure
An arrogant person easily brings trouble
A person w ho talks but does not take action willnot be trusted
A selfish person has no attachment to other people
15 R ules Tian Zi should follo w for discipline:

You m ust be very detailed in theirstrategic planning and gaining intelligence

on opponents
Rigorously check allinformation about the opponent and determine w hich is
true
Although the ene my m ay look stronger you m ust not be afraid of it
In the midst of gains think of rightousness
Re wards and punishment m ust be fairand just
You m ust tolerate hardship and withstand pressure to complete your task

Protect those w ho are in danger, bring happiness to those w ho are in fear,

forgive and ask for return those w ho rebel, bring justice to those w ho are
wronged, Raise up the low, surpress the strong and arrogant. Destroy your
ene mies, enrich the greedy, use those w ho have desires, hide those w ho are
fearful, get close to good strategists, stay away from slanderers.

The M a n u al Of Earth

One person can teach 10 people and ten can teach 100 and 100 can teach and
this goes on untilallthe people are trained.

Fighting isw on through being quiet and calm. A group wins by being united.
One w ho isunified willbe successful. One w ho has dissension willbe
defeated. W hen the Tian Zi are facing danger allof the Sons should be
united, m ake plans together and appoint the best leaders Entrust the upright
with responsibility. Eliminate the deceitful. Preserve the kind and be decisive
without delaying.

W hen you e mpo wer people, that power becomes yours.

The distrustfulbeco me faithful
Those w ho are loyal are kept that way
The people beco me your proponents

W hen you take po wer away from people, you create offense by showing you
distrust them.
Because of fear
Because you suspect a lack of loyalty
Both opinions breed hatred against you

A m an without capable advisors islike a starving m an eating poisonous food.

The art of structuralpo wer lies in the recruiting the able, appointing ministers,
counselors,and e mpo wering people.

Instillright values like kindness, righteousness, and educate m orality to the

people. Tellpeople w hat isright and wrong, allowing them to look out for
each other. Be decisive and strictin giving out rewards and issuing

handles m atters, and always be cultivating himself to be kind, righteous,
smart and brave

Those w ho are bound to your success should be honored and loved. Those
w ho are not bound to your success should be used.

W a ys of kn o wing so m e o n e

Sow discord to see w ho his loyalty isto

Use strong w ords to arouse anger,to see how he reacts
Ask for opinions on certain plans to see ho w knowledgeable he is
Inform him that a crisis isiminent and see ho w brave he is
M ake him drunk to observe his true m orals and character
Attempt to bribe him to see ifhe iscorrupt
Give him some tasks and see ifhe isable to fulfillhis promises

Ifhe isrich but does not com mit offenses he iskind

Ifhe has a high position but does not become arrogant he isrighteous
Ifhe stays in his position he isloyal
Ifhe solves problems without hiding anything he istrustworthy
Ifhe isin danger but stillm oves forward he iscourageous
Ifhe m anages e mergencies w ellhe has strategic ability

Those w ho are very calculating about their gain or loss and betray others

In council, hear the opinions of alland secret information m ust be protected.

W hoever discloses secret information should be destroyed.

In general, the causes of betrayal of secret information are carelessness,

drinking and love and disclosure can be detected by:
Changes in attitude
Changes in Conduct
Changes in appearance
Countenance
P u nishing The U nrighteous

Punishment isused to attack the wicked and virtue isused to stabilize peace.
Your rewards should be like m ountains. Your punishment like streams.

Disordering the constant

Turning their backs on Virtue
Going against the seasons of Heaven
Endangering Virtuous People

These are the causes for punishment.

W hen rectifying the unrighteous -

Do not offend his religion or Spiritualbeliefs

Do not take his resources
Do not destroy his property
Do not harm the elderly or young
Do not treat adults as ene mies unless they engage you in conflict
Ifthose around the offender are injured provide help to them
W hen the guilty have been punished -

Correct and rectify them

The 6 Structural D a n g ers

Ifyour subordinates enjoy to m uch luxury itda mages your virtue

Ifyour people are not productive itda mages your influence
Ifyour subordinates form cliques and parties itinjures your authority
Ifyour subordinates have private relationships with others in power
comparable to yours itda mages your aweso meness

Being broad and vast and surrounded by people who are are wealthy and
nu merous, the Son of Heaven loves the people. His kindness extends and
flows to all.

Insuring rewards and punishments are fairand transparent and are

implemented in a timely fashion. People are rewarded according to their
accomplishment and the talented and able are e mployed.

M aintaining forces that are m assive and wellequipped. They have the
assistance of their neighbors or the support of powerfulallies.

These are the ways the Son of Heaven builds the foundation for great and
lasting po wer.

The M a n u al Of Fire

Co mbat isthe greatest affairof the individual the basis of life and death.
The W ay of survival or extinction. Itm ust be thoroughly pondered and
analyzed.

Even though you m ay be strong and powerful those w ho love fighting will
perish in the end, and even though peace may prevailunder heaven, those
w ho forget warfare willcertainly be endangered.

W hen you are about to engage in battle, you m ust first evaluate your
opponents mind by con mparing itwith your mind to determine w ho ism ore
controllled. Only then can you know yourself.

Do not m ove unless there are definite advantages to be gained. Do not use
force unless you can succeed. Do not fight unless you are in danger.

W hen you go forth and have no doubts, then follow your plan. W hen you rob
the ene my of his plans and stillhe doesn't confront you press the attack
ho me. Ifyou can see clearly and occupy high ground, then overawe them into
sub mission. This isthe highest expression of the Way of combat.
In normal situations w hen fighting, ifthe opponent does not make an error in
judge ment, ho w can you defeat them? Itcan be compared with a ga me of
chess w here two ene mies begin with equal strength. As soo as someone
m akes a mistake, truly no one can rescue him. For this reason, in both ancient
and m odern times, victory and defeat have proceeded from a single error.

Those w ho kno w w hen to fight and w hen not to fight willwin.

Those w ho kno w ho w to use soft and hard willwin.
Those w ho are determined in their purpose willwin.
Those w ho are wellprepared to seize opportunity willwin.
Seeking fame
Contending for benefits and advantages
Seeking revenge
Internal strife
Lack of resources

These are the reasons for conflict.

The Ancient Sages said: The less you de mand from an opponent the less he
willresist you.

The less effort an opponent m akes the less you need to m ake.
People should be treated w ellor crushed. They can avenge smaller injuries.
They can't easily avenge m ore serious injuries. The injury done should be
such that you do not fear revenge.

For one to attack ten nothing isgreater than a narrow defile. The Son of
Heaven with no fear can frighten 1000. No one under heaven willbe able to
withstand them in battle.

Strategies w h e n facing an e n e m y

W hen faced with an e mergency handle itwith composure

W hen the ene my isgreedy bait him with smallbenefits
W hen the ene my isin chaos, attack him
W hen the ene my belittles us, fan his arrogance further
W hen the ene my isin unity, seek to break them do wn
W hen the ene my isstrong seek to make him weak

W hen the ene my isweak do not use your fullstrength against them. Never
under estimate the ene my no matter w hat.

M artialPower isexercised in accord with the ene mys m ove ments. Changes
arise from the confrontation between two opponents.

Orthodox and unorthodox tactics are produced from the inexhaustible

resources of the mind.

In combat, you usually engage with the orthodox and gain victory through the
unorthodox. Therefore one w ho excels at e mploying the unorthodox isas
inexhaustible as Heaven, and unlimited as the Yangtze and Yellow rivers.

Those things w hich reach an end and begin again are the sun and m oon.
Those things w hich die and are reborn are the four seasons.

W hen action isinitiated itbeco mes the orthodox; w hat has not yet been
initiated isthe unorthodox. W hen the unorthodox isinitiated and not
responded to,then itwillbe victorious. Those w ho a surplus of the
unorthodox willattain victory.

Our orthodox should be like the m ountain, our unorthodox like thunder.Even

though the ene my isdirectly opposite our front,no one can understand
w here our unorthodox and orthodox powers are. At this point w hat shape
do Ihave? Thus with the orthodox we are victorious. With the unorthodox we
are also victorious.
The Strategy Of K ar m a

Exploitthe advantages created by the tacticalbalance of power.Increase the

ene mys excesses, seize w hat he loves. Then we, acting from without, can
cause a response from within.

In order to attack the strong you m ust nurture them to m ake them even
stronger, and increase them to make them even m ore extensive. W hat istoo
strong willcertainly break; w hat istoo extended m ust have deficiencies.
Attack the strong through his strength.

W hen neither the beginning nor end have yet

beco me visible no one isable to know them.
The Tian Zi's changes an d m o v e m e nts

Heaven and Earth are spiritualand enlightened, with the thousand things they
change and transform.

The Son of Heaven should not be constant in combat. He should change and
transform in response to the opponent. He does not precede affairs.W hen the
ene my m oves he im mediately follows up. Thus he isable to formulate
inexhaustible strategies and m ethods of control. He can sustain and
complete the aweso meness of Heaven. Such a strategist isa Son of Heaven.

The tacticalbalance of power lies in the extremities of the Way. Ifyou have
something, pretend not to have it;ifyou lack something, appear to have it.
Then ho w can the ene my trust the appearance?

The M a n u al Of W ater

Authentic SocialPo wer lies in providing Benefitto people.

The ability to help people gain Benefitisthe Way, and allunder heaven will
give theirallegiance to the one w ho walks the Way.

In general, people hate pain, take pleasure in life, welcome righteousness and

pursue benefits.

True kindness issharing the sorrows and sufferings, the likes and dislikes, and
Benefitwith people. W here there iskindness and righteousness people will
go, and allunder Heaven willpledge allegiance to the person w ho istruly
kind.

W hen the people don't have water the Tian Zi doesn't m ention his thirst.
W hen there isstillw ork to be done the Son of Heaven doesn'tspeak of
fatigue. W hen peoples stoves have not been litthe Son of Heaven doesn't
speak of hunger. This isho w the Son of Heaven shares the pain and suffering
of the people.

Ifyou have the same willas the people there isnothing you can'taccomplish.
Bringing B e n efit To all Is The W a y Of Social P o w er
The w orld isnot the do main of any one person. The resources in the world,
and the people in the w orld are not the do main of any one person.

Anyone w ho shares benefitwith allunder heaven willgain the world.

Anyone w ho hordes benefits willlose the world.

The Son of Heaven accords with the Way of Heaven and the 4 Seasons. He
creates Benefitfor others and places the Virtuous in power.

Using righteousness as the basis of his actions and decisions, and using

kindness as his foundation he establishes his mighty virtue.

Sho w kindness and you willbe loved.

Sho w righteousness and people willsubmit to you.
Sho w wisdo m and you willbe relied upon.
Sho w courage and you willbe e mbraced.
Sho w integrity and you willbe trusted

Gain the love of allpeople,w hich willpreserve you. Establish your

aweso meness by w hich you can wage war.

Attacking an opponent isonly permissible ifyou m ust attack out of love for
the people.

Be generous to those w ho accord with you, and those w ho oppose you break
with force.
Respect people and they willbe in harmony with you. Unite those around you
and they willbe happy.

You m ust focus on developing your wealth, because without materialwealth

you have nothing to spread benefit.

W ealth, charity and desire. These are the three pursuits of life.
