SELF-PORTRAIT DIPTYCH
ASSIGNMENT:
Make a diptych that includes a self-portrait and
the contents of your bag or what feels personal to
you. This should tell a story about who you are.
You can present this portrait or landscape.
Diptych - A diptych (pronounced diptik) was
originally a pair of paintings hinged together. In
modern art the diptych is often just a pair of images
which reflect a common story or theme in each image.
In photography the diptych has become a popular
format. Pairs of closely associated portraits, images or
themed pictures are often used to off-set one another.
In photographic presentation a pair of pictures are
often put together in the same actual image. As a
format, one image file with two pictures is a diptych.
Self-Portrait - a photographic portrait of yourself.
This also needs to be taken by yourself - camera
self-timer, reflection.

A leksandra Karpowicz is a London
based Fine Art photographer. Her work is focused
on peole and human behaviour. She has developed
photography series such as Tribute to Dance,
Triumph of the Body and her latest work Lets Talk
About Sex, which she receive Best Portrait and Visitors
Choice awards in National Open Art Competition as
well she was shorlisted in Women of the Future Award
in Arts&Culture Category. Aleksandra is also a found-
er of networking platform LoVArts.
Describe your development as a photographer.
What challenges you have faced, your achievements
and aims for future.
Ive got a Masters Degree in Political Science.
Ive worked in politics for a few years, but I found out
that it limits me and its not something I want to do. I
came to London with a decision to completely change
my career. Ive decided to study photography, because
thats what I was interested in for quite a long time.
Ive been taking pictures since I was 7 and even back

I try to be fairly organised, because

get done. Im my own boss. Im a
photographer but also Im my mar-

ally 8am and start a day from there
breakfast, coffee and then start
working. Beginning with emails, ar-
ranging meeting, arranging shoots,
working on next projects. I make

and one day and check what is done

Where do you get ideas? What
inspires you?
Every single project is inspired by
something different, but the general
interest in people comes from the
fact that Im a very social person.
Friend of mine calls me the most
people person. Its just easy for me The project is focused on the beau-
ple. I did a one year course at the University of Art at
LCC London College of Communication. Ive started
working as a freelance photographer while I was still at
the University, but I found it very challenging because
I didnt know exactly what I want to do, so I was do-
ing everything: fashion, studio photography, portraits,
photo-journalism - everything I could possibly do. Ive
started doing photos in the studio: the dance series
Tribute to Dance and about body Triumph of the
body. I didnt even have a goal what to do after that, I
just did it because I love that. Somehow these photos
were discovered by one of the galleries in London in
the beginning of last year (2014). I was approached by
the gallery, they wanted to represent me and exhibit my
photos. That was the turning point when I decided that
I dont want to be a photographer anymore, I want to be
a fine art photographer, so thats what Ive focused on.
Ive only started exhibiting my work two years ago, so
its all fresh and new.

A massive step further was my
latest project Lets talk about sex.
Its a psychological study. I went

who people are. The whole project
is inspired by academic research and
books by Alfred Kinsey, which were
written in 1948 and 1953, when sex
topic didnt exist. I did two months
of research on that subject. Human
sexual behavior depends on biologi-
cal factors such as age, sexual orien-
tation and gender and social aspects:
who are their parents, where were
they born, where did they grow up,
who are their friends, their social
circle and the most interesting one
religion. All of those aspects shape
sexual behavior. I did a psycho-
logical experiment. Ive invited 48
men and 48 women aged between
18 and 76 of different backgrounds
and different races. Ive asked them
12 questions, which were meant to
help them clearly visualise a person
they want to present in the session.

and landscapes to portraits. Since young age, he has been actively involved in
the creative and artistiv field, and even was part of a French travelling troupe
of internatioanl actors.

When did you become interested in
photography? Is there something or
someone that influenced you?
I remember coming upon the Documentary/
Talk on National Geographic Live, titled The
Life of A Photograph. The talk explores the
lifes work of the
photographer Sam Abell, who has worked for
National Geographic for a few decades now.
There was something about his work and the
passion that he introduced it with, that capti-
vated my attention. The richness and beauty
in his photography connected with me and in-
spired me to immerse myself in that field.
What type of photography do you do?
I am still in the process of discovering myself,
but what I mostly enjoy doing is portraiture
and travel/street photography. I have even
applied some of the techniques that Sawm
Abell has talked about in his work, including
the idea of composing the frame and waiting
for the perfect moment.
In my portraiture work, I am mainly focusing
in photographing people that I find visually
captivating. I always look for a special char-
acteristic in someone that sets them apart and
makes them unique. I like working with peo-
ple who understanding modeling from an act-
ing standpoint as well, so that they can convey
a specific emotion and connect to the viewer
on an empirical level.
I have also fallen in love with the quality of
film photography and I use it for experiment-
ing with portraiture and film noir type of
photos. The life in a film negative cannot be
matched by any modern digital camera, there-
fore I have noticed myself working backwards.
I learned photography on a digital camera and
am slowly beginning to explore older methods
of creating and developing a photograph.
If you had to describe your photography
style in three words, what would they
be?
Unexpected, Explorative, Meditative
What is the secret to developing your
own style of photography?
Never fear taking risks. It is only through trial
and error that you will find a distinct style of
photography. I am personally developing my
own style by experimenting as much as I can
and using every type of mixed media tool that I
can work with, to see where I excel. Dont limit
yourself within your comfort zone and always
seek new and exciting things and photographic
opportunities. It is quite normal to go through
the stages of identity crisis that every up and
coming photographer does as well, but you will
eventually self-reflect and understand what sets
you apart from the others in the field.
What makes you different from other
photographers?
I feel that every artist, musician, photographer,
etc.. is unique in their own way, because no-
bodys work can be replicated exactly. Finding
what makes ones work different lies in what
their inspirations are, what their environment
offers them and how they identify themselves.

Overall good standard of output but a lot of vague

any written element.
Remember - You are marked not only on the final
photographs but the process of getting to the final
choices.
