Admission to PhD Programmes
In the Faculties of Electrical, Mechanical, Computer Science and Engineering, Science and
Humanities
1. Academic Pre-requisites for PhD Programmes
1.1 PhD Programme in Engineering Departments
For admission to the PhD Programme in Engineering departments, a candidate must have :-
a) Masters degree in Engineering / Technology from a recognized University in the relevant
area with a minimum CPI of 6.5 or 60% of marks or first class; and
b) Bachelors degree in Engineering / Technology from a recognized University in the
relevant branch.

1.2 PhD Programme in Science Departments


For admission to the PhD Programme in Science departments, a candidate must have :-
a) a first class degree in Master of Philosophy from a recognized University in the
proposed area of investigation; and
b) a Masters degree in Science from a recognized University in the relevant branch
( Mathematics/ Physics/ Chemistry ) with a minimum CPI of 6.5% or 60% of marks or
first class by regular full time study.
(or)
a) a Masters degree in Engineering / Technology from a recognized University in the
relevant field with a minimum CPI of 6.5 or 60% of marks or first class ; and
b) a Bachelors degree in Engineering / Technology or Science from a recognized
University by regular full time study.

1.3 PhD Programme in Science and Humanities


For admission to the PhD Programme in the department of Science and Humanities, a candidate
must have :-
a) a first class degree in Master of Philosophy from a recognized University in the proposed
area of investigation and
b) a Masters degree in Management / Computer Applications from a recognized University
in a relevant field with a minimum of 60% of marks or First class or equivalent

(Or)
a) a Masters degree in Engineering / Technology from a recognized University in a related
field with a minimum CPI of 6.5 or 60% of marks and
b) a Bachelors degree in Engineering / Technology from a recognized University in the
relevant area.

2. Category of Admission: The University admits M.Phil / PhD students under the
following categories:
M.Phil / PhD Programme is available as (a) Full Time or (b) Part Time.
A Full time programme may be under (a) Regular (b) Sponsored or (c) Self-
financed.

2.1 REGULAR: A student in this category works full-time for his/her M.Phil / PhD degree.
He/She may receive assistantship from the University or fellowship from CSIR/UGC or
any other recognized funding agency.

2.2 SPONSORED (FULL-TIME): A student in this category is sponsored by a recognized


R&D organization, academic institution, government organization or industry for doing
research in the University on a full-time basis. He/ She must be a regular employee of the
sponsoring organization with at least one year of professional experience in the respective
field. The University will not provide any assistantship/fellowship to such a student.
Sponsorship letter (RS Form-I) must be attached with the application.

2.3 SELF-FINANCED: A student in this category will work full-time or part-time towards
the M.Phil / PhD Programme. A part time student must have at least one year of
professional experience in the respective field. The University does not provide any
assistantship/fellowship to such a student.

3. PART-TIME (Sponsored funded or self financed): A student in this category is a


professionally employed person including the staff of the University, who pursues the M.Phil /
PhD Programme while continuing his/her the duties. He/She must be a regular employee of the
sponsoring organization with at least one year of professional experience in the respective field.
The University will not provide any assistantship/fellowship to such a student. A No Objection
Certificate from the Head of the Institution/Organisation in which he/she is employed (RS Form-
II) must be enclosed at the time of application.
4. EXTERNAL: This category refers to a student employed in an R&D organization/
academic institution /industry having adequate research facilities. The research work leading to
the M.Phil / PhD degree may be carried out largely in the parent organization of the candidate
under a Local Supervisor from the organization but with the overall guidance provided by a
faculty member (University Supervisor) of the Department/Centre in which he/she is registered.
He/She must be a regular employee of the sponsoring organization with at least one year of
professional experience in the respective field. The University will not provide any
assistantship/fellowship to such a student. A certificate from the Head of the sponsoring
Institution/ Organisation in which he/she is employed (RS Form-III) must be enclosed at the
time of application.
Relaxation for SC/ST Candidates: Eligibility criteria will be relaxed by 5% marks or 0.5 CPI for
SC/ ST applicants.
4. Reservations: The reservation of seats in admissions for SC, ST, OBC categories and for
Persons with Disability (PD) will be as per Government of India rules. OBC candidates will have
to enclose certificate and self-declaration statement as per formats as indicated at Annexures-I
and II.
Application form can also be obtained from the Admissions Officer, Vel Tech Dr RR & Dr SR
Technical University, Chennai-600 062 by ordinary post or in person, on payment of Rs.1000/-
by DD drawn in favour of Vel Tech Dr.RR & Dr.SR Technical University, Chennai payable at
Chennai.

5. Filled in application forms complete with copies of mark sheets / certificates and other
testimonials and a Demand Draft for Rs.1000/- drawn in favour of Vel Tech Dr.RR &
Dr.SR Technical University, Chennai payable at Chennai should reach the Admissions
Officer in closed envelope superscripted as Application for M.Phil / PhD admission in the

Candidates applying for more than one department should submit a separate application for each
department by making copies of the blank application.

6. Selection: The University reserves the right to call a limited number of candidates for written
test or/ and interview, based on performance in GATE/NET, grades/marks in the qualifying
examination, etc.
