Copy, Rename, and Modify a Bar List
Detailing Tools
Definition Libraries
Excel Import
Calculator
Allows you to copy an entire bar list at one time including all notes and takeoff items. You
can copy a bar list to the same job or to other jobs.
There are multiple ways to copy a bar list: Save As and Copy/Rename tool.
Save As
To use the Save As feature, simply open the bar list that you want to copy and click File >
Save As.
Choose a new Control Code by clicking the # button and change any job, release, or
description information as necessary. Then click OK.
Copy/Rename/Modify
The Copy/Rename feature should be opened from the main menu or while all of your bar
lists are closed.
Make any changes as necessary and then click the green check icon.
Before selecting your control codes, you need to specify how the Split function will be used.
Click the Options button to set up your split options.
Split - Use Split Item to move some, but not all, of the pieces of an item, so that a portion of
the quantity remains in the source file and a portion is moved to the destination file.
For example, a list contains 24 pieces of #4, 12-00 rebar. Use the Split Item option to move
7 pieces of the item to the destination file.
Accumulate - Accumulate and Split allows you to move a specified number of pieces from
one file to another.
Range - Use Move Range to move a range of items from one file to another. For example,
you could move all larger sized bars, all bent bars, all straight bars, or all bars of a specified
grade or length.
Select your criteria at the top, then select the Source and Destination files and click
Load.
Click the green check to move all the items to the Destination file.
Choose the Control Code that you would like to copy information from.
Select the items to be moved by clicking on the check box to the left of the items. You can
select individual takeoff items on the Takeoff tab, bar marks in the Marked Items tab, or all
items by clicking Select All.
Note: If you select an item on the Takeoff tab that has a bar mark, the corresponding line on
the Marked Items tab is automatically selected for you.
Definition libraries are most commonly set up when creating a job to ensure all bar marks
created for a job are unique.
When creating a job, click on Engineering Defaults and check the box Use Job Bar Mark
Library.
Under Common Information > Setup > Setup Excel Import Parameters
Open a new or existing Bar List and then go to File > Get Excel Data
aSa Calculator
When entering lengths in the Bar List, you can use the * key to bring up the aSa
Calculator.
Example: You may customize the screen for specific engineers or for DOT jobs.
In the Bar List Screen, click Tools > Customize to customize various parts of the Bar List
screen.
Screen Preferences
Customize the behavior of certain buttons and actions in Bar List.
Field Order
Customize the fields of the Takeoff area (the fields where you enter material).
You can now set an action for each fields. Depending on the field, select Increment or
Duplicate.
Save customization schemes based on your needs. For example, you could save a
highway work scheme, a standard detailing scheme, etc.

o Spiral Calculator
The Spiral Calculator allows you to calculate spiral steel and add it to your
bar list. Although you can enter spirals on the main Bar List screen, Spiral
Calculator gives you greater flexibility by providing the ability to divide a
single spiral into multiple sections.
In Bar List, click Tools and choose Spiral Calculator and enter the desired
lengths in the appropriate fields. When you are finished entering the lengths,
click Calculate and see the calculated results. If you are satisfied with the
results, click the Add Bars button to automatically add these bars to your bar
list.
o Vary Sets
Quickly detail a sloping wall or similar structure by doing a takeoff in Bar
List.
To calculate the quantity of bars in the slope, press Enter on your keyboard
in the Quantity field while the field is blank. This allows you to enter the
span and spacing of the bars. Press OK and the quantity is automatically
figured and entered for you. Enter your bar size and shape if needed
Both straight and bent bars can be varied.
Next, enter the first length of your slope in the Length field. This can be
either the longest or the shortest length, its up to you.
Then, click the Vary button. Choose the vary code, varying type (bars par set
or by increment) and then enter the last length. If you entered the shortest
The bars are added as one line in your Takeoff Grid but are shown in detail
on Bar List and other reports
In the Takeoff Grid, vary bars are indicated by having data in the
columns that start with V such as VCode, V NoEach, etc.
o Tie Calculator
Access the Tie Calculator from the Tools menu within Bar List.
Quickly add bars to your Bar List by selecting a shape of a tie and the
quantity, dimensions, and bar sizes of ties that you need.
Note: aSa has many built-in ties but you can define your own tie
patterns using aSa Tie Manager. To access Tie Manager, click Tools
and choose Tie Manger. Click the Help button (?) for complete
instructions on using Tie Manager.
Line Item Placing Note - The placing note is a short message associated with
a takeoff item. On the placing list, the placing note appears to the right of
the corresponding takeoff item.
Placing notes can be entered per line item by clicking the Options
button in Bar List and then clicking the Identifiers tab. This field
cannot be added to your main takeoff area but you can use Default
Values from the Material field to have Placing filled in automatically
for lines that you are about to enter and then change the value when
your placing needs change.
Placing Note - Short - The short placing note continues a line item placing
note, and appears in the Notes column of the report.
Placing Note - Long - A message that breaks across the entire placing list.
Both Placing Notes can be accessed by selecting the Material field
within Bar List and choosing Placing Note. Next, select your type
(short or long) and type in your note
