Introduction (Essential Question): How do I pronounce the vowel diagraphs AI and AY?
Standard: Language
Cluster: Knowledge of Language
Objective: ELA.2.38: Use knowledge of language and its conventions when writing, speaking,
reading, or listening. Compare formal and informal uses of English.
Specific Objective: Students will have to score above mastery to pass this
assignment. Students will score above mastery on the rubric and receive a
check mark.
Direct Instruction:
1. I will display the chart found on page T115. I will call on students to
read the words on the chart. (Pre-assessment)
2. I will review the information found on page T114. Students will learn
the sounds AI and AY make and where they go in a word. I will
review the chart again on page T115 to make sure students have a
better understanding of how to make the AI and AY sound for
different words.
3. I will pass out pages 12 to the students. I will read the directions and
have students complete the page.
Guided Practice:
1. Students will participate in the group discussion from page T114.
2. Students will complete page 12 as a whole group activity.
Differentiation:
Tier 1: I will help the students pronounce the words listed in the chart on
page T115. I will have the student repeat each word after me. I will review
the chart with the student every day this week.
Tier 2: I will encourage the students to sound each of the letters out when
saying the words on the chart. I will help the student sound the word out.
Tier 3: Students will pronounce the words independently from the chart.
Lesson Closure:
1. For the ticket out the door, students write down the sound AI or AY make.
Independent Practice:
1. Students will complete page 12 by reading the words aloud. Students will also
underline the AI and AY in every word.
Formative-Assessment:
Checklist Assessment
1. Page 12: Checklist will be used. If student pronounces the word correctly, the student will
get a check. If the student does not, the student will not receive a check. Students will
receive a check mark.

Reflection: Overall, this lesson went well. Most of the students knew how to
pronounce the words on the chart; however, some of the students did not.
My teacher did not have the transparency for the chart that was listed in the
book, so I created the chart myself and wrote the words just like in the book.
I pointed to a word and called on a student to read the word. Each student
tried to pronounce the word. I did not make every student read every single
word off the chart, because there is just not enough time during reading to
accomplish that goal. If I ever do a lesson like this again, I will try to make it
so all students can read every single word. My class was well behaved and
followed directions during this lesson.
