all. This year we also initiated a new-
found relationship with the Moose-
head Riders Snowmobile Club and
enjoyed the hospitality of their club-
house on the Scammon Road as our
evening gathering place and bunk-
house. This relationship was kindled
during last years Fly In and made
strong at a joint project of rebuilding
the trails to the B-52 Crash Site on
Elephant Mountain this past June.
This has all the fine makings of a
long-term relationship and we truly
appreciate the friendship and hospi-
tality of the club members. We also
sold a great deal of bottled water to
donated to us by the Nestle Corpora-
tion Poland Spring Water division
and the Pine State Trading Com-
pany who arranged for the donation.

The following day (Sunday) the ca-
dets and senior members worked out-
side the gate, preparing the 100,000
visitors for the security check so a
better flow of crowds could enter the
show. This is a significant show as the
Brunswick Naval Air Station is slated
for closure and no further air shows
are anticipated at this location. Maine
Wing used this opportunity to raise
money for the sponsorship of cadets
to Scotland next year by selling pro-
grams at the show which netted
Maine Wing, CAP with over $3,000.00
in proceeds. Forty-nine cadets had
their pictures taken in front of the Blue
Angels team and their jets. Many also
received autographs from the team
members. At 1200 on Saturday Mi-
chael Coyne and Dan Gagnon were
given clear air space to take pictures

made three passes and took 20 plus
pictures, which was presented to
Flight Operations BNAS. A big thanks

SUICIDE PREVENTION
Through the leadership of the Vice
Commander, Major Chris Hayden,
and Lee Broder, October 22, 2005
proved once again that Maine Wing is
pro-active in helping our members to
cope with the difficulties of life. Nine
Wing Members took the day to learn
about Suicide Prevention. The
classes were called Youth Suicide
Prevention Gatekeeper Training,
and Ms. Sue O Halloran and Mr.
Loren Coleman, trainers from the
Maine Youth Suicide Prevention Task
Force, made the interesting presenta-
tions. Although none of the attendees
from Maine Wing can now be consid-
ered Experts in suicide prevention,
all of us came away from the classes
better informed as to what to look for
and how to intervene to help prevent
completed suicides in our youth. Why
is this training important to us? We
have to look at data that has been
collected and analyzed by the ex-
perts. In Maine, Suicide is the second
leading cause of death for youth aged
15-24 and the third leading cause of
death for youth aged 10-14. From
1999-2003 there were a total of 805
confirmed suicides in Maine. Of those
suicides 106 were youth. Eight were
aged 10-14, 46 were aged 15-19 and
52 young adults were aged 20-24. If
just one of these Deaths by Suicide
could have been prevented, would it
have been worth the training? I bet if
you put that question to any parent,
grandparent, aunt, uncle, brother or
sister you would hear a loud Yes.
If these classes are offered in the fu-
ture, please take the time to attend.

saves someone from doing something
that will affect them and everyone
else they know for the rest of their

 Lewiston-Auburn Receives CAP
826 Plane
Just before the snow arrived at Lewis-
ton/Auburn Airport Major Chris Hay-
den arrived to deliver CAP Flight 1727
or CAP 826. As squadron members
painted their new headquarters, Major
Hayden turns over the official book for
the aircraft to Captain Dan LeClair,
Deputy Commander of the Lewiston
Auburn Composite Squadron.

B-17G Sentimental Journey
Visits Bar Harbor
LTC Ken Goldstein was personally,
asked to assist the Commutative Air
Force during their visit of their B-17G,
Sentimental Journey, during the pe-
riod 19-26 August 2005. He was able
to assist on each day the airplane

was at BHB. As part of this assistance
he wore a CAP flight suit. His duties
included handling money for the tours
of the B-17 and including a short
briefing of all of the different compart-
ments and combat positions on the
aircraft as well. When ever he was
asked a question, by the visitors,
about something only a CAP member
would know (visit scheduling, specific
history of this particular airplane, etc.)
LTC Goldstein was able to tell them
that he was a member of the local
(BHB) CAP squadron and was able to
tell them about the CAP program
and some CAP history.
When the Liberty Foundation decided
to visit BHB with their Liberty
Belle" (another B-17G) they also
asked him to participate in the same
position as before. He was unable to
spend more than 3 days of a 10 day
visit working with the Liberty Belle
people but, again, He was in his flight
suit and wound up telling visitors
about CAP as well as what he could
about the B-17G aircraft. Thank you
to LTC Ken Goldstein for making CAP
look great in these two projects.

ICS Table Top
Exercise Training Planned
As you have noticed recently we have
had a rash of missions assigned to us
from AFRCC. The training level we
maintain is directly connected to the
outstanding results we achieve.
On Saturday, 17 December, MEWG
will hold an ICS Mission Tabletop Ex-
ercise in Augusta. This training day is
for anyone interested in learning more
about running a mission and gaining
valuable experience to sign off spe-
cific new or renewal SQTR's for Mis-
sion Base specialties. I expect this to
be a worthwhile and fun event to re-
fresh our tactical skills to the stan-
dards expected by NHQ and CAP/
USAF.

Passports & Fundraising
Members, we have 30 plus applica-
tions for Scotland! The next step in
the choosing process is passports
and fund raising. If you want to be

considered at the review board in Jan.
you must have a passport and you
must help in fund raising. I know this
has raised some concerns about why
should I pay for a passport and not be
chosen. We have learned from the
Scots mistakes, their biggest problem
was having members get their pass-
ports. If you are not willing to have a
passport in hand or show the paper-
work that you have applied please
let us know and we will take your
name off the list for consideration.
Fund Raising: We have two $1,000
donations hanging until we find two
matching donations for each one.
This could net us $6,000! The Scots
were able to raise their funds in six
months, I don't see any reason we
can't do it in a year. Please keep in
mind the review board will take your
fund raising activities into the decision
making process.

Need Planning Ahead
If you are in a hurry for a CAP driver's
license don't wait until the day you
need it to send your application. After
I receive an application it will take 1 to
2 weeks to get the driving record
back from DMV, sometimes its just a
few days but, you can not count on it
and then I have to mail the license to
the individuals and you can add on
several more days. If you send them
to Wing instead of to my home ad-
dress, I may not pick it up for 2 or 3
weeks as I no longer go to Augusta

using the electronic Form 31 again. It
is a great opportunity for your cadets
to travel and be "Messengers to the
World" about America, the Air
Force, the Civil Air Patrol, and their
home city, state, and region. I would
like for you to encourage every cadet
that is 17 and will have their Earhart
Award by 31 December of this year,
to apply. Everyone who meets the
qualifications in CAPR 52-16, 4-9, will
be considered. There is also an elec-
tronic supplemental application that
will be sent to everyone who applies
online. This supplement will be re-
turned directly to my office for review/
evaluation. I would like to request you
review and make recommendations to
your Region/Wing Commander, who
will approve the final list of personnel
selected to participate.

It Is Official
Wayne McKinney (Hallowell) has
been appointed Wing Administrator
for the Civil Air Patrol, Maine Wing.
Mr. McKinney officially assumed the
position on October 31, 2005. CAP
recently created the Wing Administra-
tor position to provide administrative
and program support to the organiza-
tion s 52 Wing commanders. Duties
will include maintaining financial and
personnel records to ensure Wing
compliance with CAP headquarters
and government requirements related
to payroll, safety and employee-
related programs. Mr. McKinney will
also assist in planning official confer-
ences, meetings and annual training
seminars; in processing registration
for Wing-sponsored events; and in
taking inventories. The Wing Admin-
istrators provide a great service to our
volunteer CAP members, said Brig
General Tony Pineda. They are an
invaluable part of the CAP team and
will support the day-to-day tasks at
the Wing. This will enable many of our
volunteer members to pursue reward-
ing service activities. Congratulations
to Wayne McKinney on your appoint-
ment as Maine Wing Administrator.

Dining Out 2005
Another Success
October 8, 2005 was the date that
many cadets and senior members
were excited about. Many remember
last year s Dining Out formal Military
Ball in Bangor. This year s ball was
also held in Bangor but it was held on
the Air National Guard Base. This
year also meant that the Grog Bowl
would be back. Col Craig Treadwell
made it very clear in the beginning
that all personnel were to be on their
best behavior and obey the rules of
the mess. Violations of the rules
meant a trip to the Grog bowl with
rules to obey there. Maj Scott Higgins
gave a brief presentation of how to
properly partake of the Grog Bowl.
This year was a little different be-
cause in the past when a female vio-
lated the rules a male would take their
place and suffer the punishment for
her. Since this is Civil Air Patrol and
we do not discriminate between gen-
ders, it was decided that females
would also suffer their own punish-
ment. For a while it seemed that
member after member made the trip
to the Grog Bowl until it was time to
eat dinner. Then Col Treadwell
stopped the punishment phase and
we settled down to a delicious steak
dinner. Some member from other
squadrons even ordered the Vegetar-
ian meal that was offered. A short
presentation was made about Iraq
and what we are doing over there and
the living conditions of the troops.
Then it was time to dance the night
away. Dancing is what all of St Croix
members did. Cadets and senior
members alike met new friends and
enjoyed the evening. We all look for-
ward to next year s dining out and
wonder how we can make it better for
everyone.

NIGHT FLIGHT SEMINAR

One Thursday November 3 , Cum-
berland County Squadron held an
FAA Wings seminar devoted to Night
Flying. Captain Don Saucier, Maine
Wing s Stan/Eval officer presented a
comprehensive program that included
an AOPA Safety Foundation video
and several PowerPoint slides. With
the days now much shorter, over 20
members of the Wing and Squadron
took advantage of this timely ground
training and refresher. The areas cov-
ered included the need to be instru-
ment proficient, horizon and percep-

Maine Wing Families!
We realize that our cadet members
are a little past the age to believe in
Santa but many members have
younger siblings at home who may
still believe. We will be returning from
Arlington on the 16th of December
and will be slowing down until the
holidays. A project I started many
years ago was to make calls from the
North Pole and have Santa talk to
young children on the 23 & 24 of De-
cember.
This was suppose to be a one Christ-
mas project but has turned out to be
every year since. Watch your emails
