Class Procedures / Daily Preparation: Time:

1. Minds-On/ Learning Hook: Provide students with stationary and ask them to write 10 min
down the ten most important people in their life. Once complete, ask them to cross
off 3 names, with the pretense that these people will no longer be in their lives.
Cross off 3 more names, then 2, then 1. Debrief how hard it was to get rid of any
one of these names, and how even if there are times where you feel you dont
matter, you will matter to someone else.

2. Hand out copies of Darkness Calls by Steve Sanderson, previewing the text and 5 min
informing students on things to consider during reading.

3. Read the story aloud to/ with the class, stopping to give think-alouds where 50 min
applicable
10 min
4. (If the story is completed during class time) Lead a discussion about the text with
the
students, touching on themes and other aspects to be discussed in the following
class

Additional Notes:
- Darkness Calls is a larger text; it is difficult to suppose whether or not we will be able to get
through it in one class, but hopefully, we can do it
- Darkness Calls contains themes and subject matter that, while relevant, is sensitive; covering
this content requires careful consideration and gentility in order to properly facilitate the
messages
