(TESTIMONIAL DINNER )

DATE/TIME
SPEAKERS

The held testimonial Lunch in Casal Seminar room is very knowledgeable and of course
emotional. This event was composed of chemical engineers board passer, we as chemical
engineering student and also the faculty were very proud for they passed the exam that said to be
very difficult. This time they shares there experience and stories before and taking exams. Some
of them shares techniques and idea on how to passed, some gives us their experience as a student
and many others. As a student , especially us Chemical engineering student although this
program is a bit difficult to study and of course to finish but we still hoping and staying strong
for this someday will come and also to be one of them as a license chemical engineer.
Hoping that someday those sacrifices that we made to get through this will pay off, that someday
we may make our parents proud for also them we made it. Through studying hard and by the
guide of our professor that always there for our continuous knowledge fill up. And of course God
for being there always eventhough our life sometimes is upside down, he is always right by our
side guiding and blessing our everyday life. - PAJARES, MARGIE LOU L.

Last December 16, 2016, the testimonial dinner for the recent ChE board passers of
Technological Institute of the Philippines was held. Its such an honour to be part of such event.
Knowing that we are at the point that we are currently dealing with the hardest part of our
program. We were inspired by the way they surpass the difficulties in their studies. Being a
student with this kind of program is not an easy one. Yes, its very true that Chemical
Engineering is somehow the hardest engineering program. Im not telling this because Im taking
this program but for the reason that during my lower years Im dealing with different subjects
that were covered by the other programs, and as I compare, Chemical Engineering courses are
really complicated. Each one of the speakers talked about their experiences before, during, and
after the board exam. They shared the things they did in order for them to passed the said exam.
During the forum, some students had the chance to ask the speakers about certain questions. This
kind of event is very important to me not only because Im a Chemical Engineering student but
also a person with lots of dreams. I want to achieve my goals, and I know that by the time Ill
graduate, its not the end of it all but just the beginning. After I graduate Im planning to review
for months then take the board exam. Soon, Ill be a proud board passer! Ill be then stand in
front of ChE students and share my own experience before, during, and after the board exam.-
SAMILLANO, KLINNETH JOY P.

We gathered a testimonial dinner together with board passers of Chemical Engineering, ChE
faculty and ChE students. The 7 board passers shares their experiences regarding the board exam
as well as the difficulties they had been through before and after taking the exam. One of them
tell us on how to deal with our social life and studies, the other gives the list of the requirements
needed when taking board exam while the rest taught us the different techniques and methods on
how to focus in review.
It was very helpful to all chemical engineering students who wish to take exam someday. The
chemical engineering department was very proud to them. They are the product of their success.
Mixed emotion was felt by all new chemical engineers. Different stories were told behind their
success, the success that will never be forgotten as theyve already reached one of their goals. I
hope and wish that someday I will be one of them. To be a chemical engineer is very hard to
attain the reason why so much happiness was felt. Giving thanks to all the people who make it
real and giving back as a depth of gratitude must be done.- JAYNIE LEE M. VILLARAN

The event is a celebration that everyone must rejoice. The speakers were my friends during their
academic years and it really made me happy seeing them on the podium. As a student, we have
our own stories to fill in our journey to reach our dreams. Struggles, failures and hardships are
always there but one thing that we should keep in mind that in times of doubts we should always
think that positivity, perseverance, friendship and love must always prevail. This testimonial
event really inspired me to strive harder and made me promise that one day, I am the one holding
that microphone they are using right now. That I will be able to share my experiences in life and
shall be able to thank every person that stayed behind my back. The lesson that really inspired
me was Failure happens when you stop trying so as a student, we should fight for our dreams,
no matter what challenge life may give. CABUDOL, CHRISTIAN JOHN F.

In line with the recent November 2016 Chemical Engineering board exam, the newly declared
chemical engineers shared their success stories to the future board exam takers and other
participants through a testimonial dinner held and organized by the Practicum Class. During the
forum, the board exam passers shared their life experiences on how they were able to overcome
all difficulties and challenges that they faced throughout their academic life. They also imparted
guidance and advice such as the requirements on taking the board exam, some techniques on
having an effective review method, and how to manage and handle stressors. They gave great
appreciation and deep gratitude to those who have been part of their achievements. Overall, the
testimonies had been useful and beneficial to all the chemical engineering students. They became
a strong motivation for me to continue on pursuing my goals despite all hardships. Their
testimonies challenged me personally to do better and become a successful chemical engineer
who would soon share my own success story to inspire others. BALDECANAS, ABIGAIL

PLANT VISIT 1
PROPAK

The practicum class visited two process industries in Rizal on the 13th of January 2017. The
first site was the Malaya thermal power plant in Pililla, Rizal. The plant visit started with a brief
introduction of the companys background and history, and a short discussion on their
management system and operations. During the tour, they showed us their control rooms and
some of their machines and equipment. They also stated some details on how they perform their
processes in order to supply power and energy. We also learned the importance of their treatment
facilities and how their industry comply with environmental standards.
The second plant visit was held at Propak, a plastic manufacturing industry in Antipolo, Rizal.
We learned the complete workflow of how different plastic products are being made, from the
raw materials up to attaining the final product. In the production area, we were able to see how
the assembly line works, to meet and ask questions to the people that worked there. We were able
to understand more the plastic manufacturing processes, such as the extrusion blow molding
machine by seeing hands-on demonstrations.
This plant visit has been very educational and I'm glad we had the opportunity to discover new
experiences since it is a big part of our learning process to acquire more knowledge through
actual exposure to the different manufacturing industries. This gives us practical ideas that may
help us visualize what we are learning at school and engage us into thinking about how we can
relate and apply this in the future especially in chemical engineering design.

Last Friday, January 13, 2017, we had our plant visit in the area of Rizal. The first plant that we
visited was Malaya Thermal Power Plant, its so fulfilling to visit such place. Its my first time to
enter a vicinity of that kind of plant. As a Chemical Engineering student it is very important to
know things inside a plant for me to understand fully the path that I chose. Before we started
roaming the different areas inside the company, the employees oriented us first and gave us ideas
on how the plant works. They showed us the process flow diagram and the details of the
equipment they are using. After the orientation they started to tour us in their plant site. They
brought us to the control room, and I was amazed because I finally saw an actual control room.
We had this subject, Feedback and Control Systems, our professor was discussing things about
controlling an equipment, that it can be controlled there in the equipment manually or through
control room. By that time I was just only visualizing it. The staffs showcase their production
process. They showed us that they first test the fuels that were delivered to them before
processing it, if the fuels did not meet their requirements then they were rejected. They also
toured us to their waste water treatment area, they ascertained us that they were not just throwing
their waste water in the lake near them but they treat it first. At the time of our visit, the plant
was on shutdown so we did not able to witness their operating production process. But were
already happy with what we saw. If we want to enter that kind of industry, at least we already had
the idea.
Our next stop was Propak Industry. This plant was processing plastics specifically bottles used to
contain lotions and different liquids. At that time, we saw how they make bottles for Personal
Collection. We were currently taking plastics and polymer courses so its nice that we had visited
such kind of plant. I was truly stunned by how plastic bottles were made. They used this kind of
machine called extrusion blow molding machine to mold bottles. The engineer employed there
showed us their process from raw materials up to the final product. All the staffs there were
approachable and cheerful. They were talking to us while working. Its nice that even though
they have work to finish they still entertained us.
The plant visit we had was a great one. Though we are all tired after the visit. One things for
sure, we gain knowledge and it was a very nice experience. - SAMILLANO, KLINNETH
JOY P.
Our very first Plant Visit was held in Pililla Rizal and Antipolo. STX Marine Service Co., Ltd.,
Malaya Thermal Power Plant is our first destination, we are amazed to see real life equipment
and tanks that was huge. It has a different feeling for me to see those tanks and equipment, even
though we as a chemical engineering student were designing. But I was amazed and proud that
what your studying right now is one of the very important things that will make an industry work
and relies on those materials.
We are oriented first by some personnel of Malaya Thermal Power Plant about its plant history
and overview. According to the speaker, The Malaya power plant was acquired in the mid-1970s
by the state-owned National Power Corp (Napocor). After 20 years, Korea Electric Power Corp.
(Kepco) started rehabilitating the facility after it won the international bidding for the
rehabilitation, operation, maintenance and management contract conducted by Napocor. It was
under Kepcos management that the power plant was able to operate at its original rated
generation capacity of 650 MW. He also discussed the Organization and Manpower, Major
Equipment, Current Organization and the Initiatives regarding to the plant.
Then we were tour in the plant and taught us how it works. Those ideas gives us knowledge for
our everyday life as a student to apply, especially in designing. - PAJARES, MARGIE LOU
L.

We, the practicum class of 2016-2017 had our plant visit at STX Marine Service Co., Ltd.,
Malaya Thermal Power Plant, Pililla, Rizal and at ProPak, Antipolo, Rizal last 13th day of
January, 2017. The employees in thermal power plant were so accommodative and approachable.
They first briefly discussed what and how the plant is all about and works. The Malaya Thermal
Power Plant is now operated by STX, is consists of two (2) units with a combined generating
capacity of 650 MW whose output is fed into Bulacan, Rizal and Laguna. It is located at the east
shore of Laguna de Bay, Barangay Malaya, Pililla, Rizal, 70 kms Southeast of Manila. The plant
site covers an area approximately 26.3 hectares. For this, Malaya Thermal Power Plant has been
considered as one of the best performing IPP plants in the Philippine power industry. Malaya
Unit No. 1 is the first of two Meralco generating units to be constructed at the new 26.3 hectare-
site located along the east shore of Laguna Bay, Barrio Malaya, Pililla, Rizal, 70 km. south east
of Manila. It is rated at 300 000 kW.
While in Propak industry where, plastics are made through extrusion blow molding machine.
Weve experienced to ask more on how it works. From the raw materials they fed up to the final
product. In the production of moulded products, many types of dies or moulds are used to
confine the plastic mass of molding material while it sets or hardens to the desired shape. Plastic
is melted and extruded into a hollow tube (a parison). This parison is then captured by closing it
into a cooled metal mold. Air is then blown into the parison, inflating it into the shape of the
hollow bottle, container, or part. After the plastic has cooled sufficiently, the mold is opened and
the part is ejected. Containers such as jars often have an excess of material due to the molding
process. This is trimmed off by spinning a knife around the container which cuts the material
away. This excess plastic is then recycled to create new moldings. Spin Trimmers are used on a
number of materials, such as PVC, HDPE and PE+LDPE. Different types of the materials have
their own physical characteristics affecting trimming. Theyve shown the different section on
producing their product.
This plant visit was not for happiness and joy but also as informative and knowledgeable one.
We all got tired after all but it was as exciting as new ideas, knowledge and information of reality
of industry was being imparted by each of us. - JAYNIE LEE M. VILLARAN

One of the best ways to learn is to learn by simply watching others. The purpose of the plant
visit was to expose students to industry and engage them in thinking about how to transfer their
classroom learning to their future in engineering. We visited to plants for our tour namely,
Malaya Thermal Power Plant and Propak located at Pililia and Antipolo, Rizal. We departed from
school early in the morning to meet our schedules with the plant. We went first at the Malaya
Thermal Power Plant which became the main power source in Malni in the mid 90s. In the
present time, the plant is generating 650 MW of energy that is distributed by Meralco. During
our visit, the plant was at their shut down operation thats why we really didnt see their actual
process but we were toured around the plant. The employees there were really accommodating
and really knows what they are doing. Seeing the actual equipment, we are just seeing in the
pictures in books was fascinating that made me say that THIS IS THE REAL WORLD. The
place that really made us excited was their treatment facility where chemical engineers work.
The manager said that they should comply with the standards made by the government in
discharging wastes so necessary treatments were done. After, the tour we bid farewell to the plant
operators and said that we should try applying there because they are in need of chemical
engineers. After, the first plant, we stopped by the restaurant owned by the of our classmate in
Pililia to have our lunch. Then we go next to our second destination which is the Propak located
at Antipolo. The company is producing plastic products like containers of toilet bowl cleaners.
Here, we see how blow and injection molding equipment works. I interviewed some of the
workers to ask some questions like what is their raw materials and how can they classify product
as reject. They told me that the raw material they are using is the recycled sprues (the waste piece
in cutting plastic left by the hole through which the mold was filled) that is being grind and
mixed. The rejected were classified into two which is Class A (plastics with b lack spot or
foreign matter) and Class B (deformed, dented incomplete molding, plastic with weld line and
etc). Their quality inspector was strict in assuring that the rejects wont be mixed with the
products. Overall, we enjoyed our visit there. In the conclusion of our first plant visit, it is really
exciting to see our possible work places to make us understand different industries and to know
on what industry we belong. I am looking forward for the next plant tours we will be having.-
