1. Gavotte P.

Martini

C Mayor

Allegro Moderato

New:

Rondo form with a chorus and five different verses. Make words

First low first finger on G string (G#)

Difficulties:

A lot of accidentals

Dynamic contrast and character

String crossing. Finger action and bow action.

1st finger left hand needs to move freely from the base.

Hard to memorize

Long piece

Octave intervals

Beg-bar 8: Chorus. Talk about phrasing. Notice that every time the
chorus appears does not make it in the same way.

Beginning: On the string for the two slurred up bows. Dance character.
Finger action (thumb pinch and help of wrist and elbow)

Bar 1: First beat more important than second. Smooth string crossing with
no accent. Anticipate lowering the right arm to blend tone of the two
strings. Use Casals sound for strong/ weak feel of the slurred quarter
notes. 8th notes light of the string

Bar 2-3: Really fast bow with a little thumb pinch for the quarter notes that
are more important that the eights. Use the middle section 1/3 of the bow
for the quarter notes.

Bar 4: Breathe to show the phrasing. Release circle action to make

diminuendo.
Bars beg-bar 4: Do not do too much expressive crescendo since the second
time the phrase repeats.

Bar 6: Play the quarter notes slightly different character since the chorus
section ends.

Bars 10, 12: octaves

Bar 8-16: Starts versus B in minor key and p. Sad little story helps to
remember the theme. The balance of left hand may change by altering
position of thumb according to what side of the hand is playing. Careful with
the intonation of low first finger. There are a lot of octave intervals, practice
raising or lowering the arm to play easier.

Bar 14: Careful with intonation of high second finger. Its hard to tune
because all 2nd fingers before were low.

Bar 15: independent 4th finger

Bars 13-15: Difficult to tune a lot of accidentals and finger patterns.

Bar 20: release circle action to make diminuendo.

Bar16: Chorus in piano

Bar 24-32: Start versus C in f. Similar to versus D from bar 56. Show the
difference to students. A lot of 4th fingers

Bar 26: Point to the G#. It can be use 3rd or 4th finger. Better with 4th. p
dynamic in the second part of the verse.

Bar 28: First time low in G string. Explain.

Bar 40- 48: Versus D. it sounds like folk music first f and after p and
then the melody goes to false Chorus

Bars 41, 43: Four slurred 8th notes. Finger action for string changes. Arm
does not move and keeps low.

Bar 46: ff the loudest part of the piece. A lot of energy, thumb pinch and
low arm. False chorus

Bar 48: chorus in p

Bars 56- 64: versus E. different bows and notes from versus C.

Bars 60, 61: Different slurred pattern from bars 28, 29

Bar 72- 80: versus F. Hard for intonation. Different finger patterns. Always
two bows per bar.

Bar 74: Leave 1st finger down.
