alreadybeenwrittenindeedbyMatthewinJudaeabutbyMarkinItalymovedbytheHolySpirithe
wrotedownthisgospelinthepartsofAchaia,signifyingintheprefacethattheotherswerewrittenbeforehis,
butalsothatitwasofthegreatestimportanceforhimtoexpoundwiththegreatestdiligencethewholeseriesof
eventsinhisnarrationfortheGreekbelievers,sothattheywouldnotbeledastraybythelureofJewishfables,
or,seducedbythefablesofthehereticsandstupidsolicitations,fallawayfromthetruth.Andsoatonceatthe
starthetookuptheextremelynecessary[story]fromthebirthofJohn,whoisthebeginningofthegospel,the
forerunnerofourLordJesusChrist,andwasacompanionintheperfectingofthepeople,likewiseinthe
introducingofbaptismandacompanioninmartyrdom.OfthisdispositiontheprophetMalachi,oneofthe
twelve,certainlymakesmention.AndindeedafterwardsthesameLukewrotetheActsoftheApostles.Later
theapostleJohnwrotetheApocalypseontheislandofPatmos,andthentheGospelinAsia.

Hieropolis,theclosediscipleofJohn,relatedintheexoterics,thatis,inthelastfivebooks.Indeedhewrote
downthegospel,whileJohnwasdictatingcarefully.ButthehereticMarcion,afterbeingcondemnedbyhim
