INTRODUCTION

About India Yamaha Motor Pvt. Ltd.

Yamaha made its initial foray into India in


1985, Subsequently, it entered
into a 50:50 joint venture with the Escorts Group in 1996.
However, in August 2001, Yamaha acquired its remaining stake as
well, bringing the Indian operations under its complete control as
a 100% subsidiary of Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd, Japan.

India Yamaha Motor operates from its state-of-the-art-manufacturing


units at Fan da bad in Haryana and Surajpur in Uttar Pradesh and
produces motorcycles both for domestic and export markets. With a
strong workforce of 2000 employees, India Yamaha Motor is highly
customer-driven and has a countrywide network of over 400 dealers.

The company pioneered the volume bike segment with the launch of its
100 cc 2-stroke motorcycle RX 100. Since then, it has introduced an
entire range of 2-stroke and 4-stroke bikes in India. Presently, its
product portfolio includes Crux (lOOcc), Alba (I06cc) and Gladiator
(125cc).

president) in 1953, that today's Yamaha Motor Company was bom.

the new motorcycle manufacturer built about 200 units per month.

the launch of YAMAHA R1 in selected showrooms, J got the privilege to
interact with the distributors of Rl, the confidence levels are much
above they expected but average Jndian youth will not be able to spend
Rs 10,5 lakhs for a bike so the benefit has not extended to majority.

4Ps of Marketing

Marketing is an ongoing process of planning and executing the


marketing mix (Product, Price, Place, Promotion often referred to
as the 4 Ps) for products, services or ideas to create exchange
between individuals and organizations.

Marketing tends to be seen as a creative industry, which includes


advertising, distribution and selling, Jt is also concerned with anticipating
the customers' future needs and wants, which arc often discovered
through market research.

Essentially, marketing is the process of creating or directing an


organization to be successful in selling a product or service that people
not only desire, but arc willing to buy.

Therefore good marketing must be able to create a "proposition" or


set of benefits for the end customer that delivers value through
products or services.

Four Ps

Jn the early l%0s. Professor Neil Borden at Harvard Business Sebool


identified a number of company performance actions that can
influence the consumer decision to purchase goods or services,
Borden suggested that all those actions of the company represented a
"Marketing Mix'\ Professor E. Jerome McCarthy, also at the Harvard
Business School in the early 1960s, suggested that the Marketing Mix
contained 4 elements: product, price, place and promotion,

Jn popular usage, "marketing" is the promotion of products,


especially advertising and branding. However, in professional usage the
term has a wider meaning which recognizes that marketing is customer-
centered. Products arc often developed to meet the desires of groups of
customers or even, in some cases, for specific customers, tf. Jerome
McCarthy divided marketing into four general sets of activities. His
typology has become so universally recognized that his four activity sets,
the Four Ps, have passed into the language.

Product: The product aspects of marketing deal with the


specifications
of the actual goods or services, and how it relates to the end-
user's
needs and wants. The scope of a product generally
includes
supporting elements such as warranties, guarantees, and support.
Pricing: This refers to the process of setting a price for a product,
including discounts. The price need not be monetary - it can simply
be what is exchanged for the product or services, c,g, time,
energy, psychology or attention,
Promotion: This includes advertising, sales promotion, publicity, and
personal
selling, branding and refers to the various methods of promoting
the
product, brand, or company,
Placement (or distribution): refers to howr the product gets to the
customer; for example, point of sale placement or retailing. This
fourth P has also sometimes been called Place, referring to the
channel by which a product or services is sold (c,g, online vs,
retail), wrhich geographic region or industry, to which
segment (young adults, families, business people), etc. also
referring to howr the environment in which the product is sold in
can affect sales.

These four elements arc often referred to as the marketing mix,[3)


which a marketer can use to craft a marketing plan. The four Ps model
is most useful when marketing lowr value consumer products. Industrial
products, services, high value consumer products require adjustments
to this model. Services marketing must account for the unique nature of
services, industrial or B2B marketing must account for the long term
contractual agreements that arc typical in supply chain transactions.
Relationship marketing attempts to do this by looking at marketing from a
long term relationship perspective rather than individual transactions.

As a counter to this, Morgan, in Riding the Waves of Change (Josscy-


Bass, 1988), suggests that one of the greatest limitations of the 4 Ps
approach "is that it unconsciously emphasizes the inside-out view'
(looking from the company outwards), whereas the essence of
marketing should be the outside in approach. Nevertheless, the 4
Ps offer a memorable and workable guide to the major categories
of marketing activity, as well as a framework within which these can
be used.

objective and scientific method of finding solution of problem.
Research methodology is a way to systematically solve the research
problem. It includes the various steps that are generally adopted by
a researcher in studying problem along with the logic behind them.
During my research I have adopted the following research design.

Research Design:

research. > To determine the sources of data.

> To decide the appropriate research instrument for data

collection. > To determine the suitable sampling design and

sampling size.

> To conduct the field survey for data collection.

> To prepare the research report.

Descriptive Research

This method is undertaken when the researcher is interested in


knowing about the characteristics of certain groups such as age,
sex, education level, income. Interested in knowing the proportion
of unit in a given population who behaved in a particular
way, determining the relationship between two or more variable.

This method was the most suitable in my research work.

Data collection

There may be different types of information and data, Some of


the information may be unpublished, some is complete and
some is

incomplete, some is reliable data and some is based, Et is necessary
for flic researcher to know and the information which is usually
employed in marketing research work and the types of sources
from which it is generally collected. The research problem
decides the nature of the sources of data. They may be primary

Primary Data

Primary7 data is being collected during the course of asking


questions by performing surveys. Primary data is obtained
either through respondent; either though questionnaire or
through personal interview7. I have collected the data through both
of them.

Secondary Data:

Are the data already available in the form of print material,


website, journals etc, i have used some Magazines, Newspapers,
Websites and course material for that purpose.

Research Instrument:

I have used the structured questionnaire in my research process


which has carefully designed keeping the entire objective in mind.
Most of the questions in my questionnaires were closed ended in
nature.

Sampling plan:

The process of collecting observation from the elements of a


large population may be expensive, time consuming and difficult.
It will be cheaper and quicker to collect information from a
sample plan of the population. A sample is a subset of population
through a v alid statistical procedure so that it can be regarded
as representative of the entire population. The valid statistical
procedure of drawing sample from the population is called
sampling. Sampling plan consists of following elements:-

centre and customers so it is clear that sampling unite are nothing
but variable to be studied.
Sample Frame:

The entire list which contains the sample unit is known as


sample frame; In this case my sample frame was Delhi city.

Sample size:

The large sample is more accurate the results would be but


practically it is not feasible to survey the entire target
population or even the substantial portion of it. In this project,
being aware of the time and cost constraints, sample size was 2
direct dealers including 27 sub dealers and customers.

Sample method:

In my research process I have used Non probability7 sampling,


which involves purposive or deliberate selection of particular
units of a sample.

Contact method:

Personal interview is that in which an interviewer obtains


information from interviewee by meeting face to face. The
methods of collecting information through personal interviews
are usually carried out in a structured way.

Field survey:

After carefully choosing the way I have started the survey for
accuracy7 of the data I picked my sampling unit from some parts
of the city, and then went on to analysis and report making part.

Summary and conclusion - R15

Yamaha YZF R15 is the first model for the Indian market designed in
the true supersport image and featuring a high-level balance of
enjoyable running performance on winding roads. Packed full of
state-of-the-art technologies, the new YZF-R15 boasts performance
worthy of a supersport model and a body design that evokes the
image of the YZF-R series and gives visual expression to the quality

with maximum torque of 15 Nm at 7500rpm; which makes it like the

Design

The "R Design: This characteristic of motorcycles designed by


YAMAHA as represented by the R series reflects the philosophy
mnning through these models expressing performance visually,

f or example, YZF-R6 shows a strong body line that springs up in a


single line from the rear axle to the pivot and then to the head pipe. This
is a visual expression of the straight shape of the Deltabox frame. These
elements arc a visual expression of "frame rigidity,' Viewed from
the side, the shape created by the side panel and the upper surface
of the tank creates an impression of the center of gravity shifting to
the front tire. This is a visual representation of how the front tire
grips the road in its sporty running performance. Needless to say,
YZF-Rl, with its athletic build, is also a visual expression of
performance, A characteristic of the R series is that, when you view
the machine, you get a sense of its concept and performance.

This philosophy has been fully transmitted to YZF-R15. An important


point to note is that this motorcycle is not a sealed-down version of
YZF-Rl or YZF Rb, YZF-Rl5s design is based on having an excellent
engine cooling method.

The shape of the cowling around the radiator area was determined so that
the shapes of the air intake area and the rear outlet area where the air is
scooped out arc optimized to improve radiator efficiency. As for the
outlet area, the mid-cowl area was designed using sculpturing 3D
methods to create a three dimensional shape with a sense of volume.
This resulted in an outlet area through which air is directed outwards
with minimal resistance. We were able to present the new R series
also in terms of design, and we have been able to maximize the
performance of the liquid cooled engine, which will be a first for the
Indian market.

When viewed from the front, it gives a sense of volume that seems
well beyond its I50cc displacement. This docs not simply mean
that it is voluminous, but that it is grounded in the Ait of
Engineering which transforms function into art.

Engine

Y2F-R15 is equipped with this all-aluminum cylinder called the


DiASil Cylinder and a forged piston, the same type of piston used in
YAMAHA's supersport bikes. The fact that both the piston and cylinder
of YZF-R15 arc a 11-aluminum ensures excellent heat dissipation,
eliminates he at-induced engine power loss, and helps improve fuel
efficiency. The DiASil Cylinder is given a special surface treatment
to prevent oil evaporation from the cylinder's surface and improve
oil consumption. The cylinder also has excellent hardness and is
considerably resistant to wear compared to conventional iron
sleeves.

Additionally, the piston is made in a forging process, the optimum


way of achieving lightweight designs.The reciprocating mass with the
forged piston is approximately 20% less ( according to Yamaha test)
than with an engine of the same displacement fitted with a
conventional cast aluminum piston. Resulting in an invigorating feeling
wrhcn revving up. Conventional pistons arc typically made in a casting
process wrhcrc molten aluminum is cast in a mold. YAMAHA
developed its proprietary controlled forging technology" in 1997,
which enables mass production of forged aluminum pistons, t hese
pistons have been used in sport models such as the R series. The
same manufacturing process was used to develop YZF-R15. Forged
pistons retain the excellent strength of aluminum alloys because the
mctallurgic matrix of aluminum is not affected during the fabrication
process. Therefore, the
piston can be made lighter and thinner.

Chassis
YZF-R15 is equipped with a linked type monocross suspension that
delivers a comfortable ride and a cushioning performance that is
less prone to bottoming out. Jn particular, it reduces annoying
sinking" when riding tandem. The linked mono cross suspension
consists of a link mechanism sandwiched between the rear ami and
cushion unit to create changes in the lever ratio based on the lever
effect. When the shock absorber is almost fully extended, the lever ratio
is high and therefore the spring is soft, and the
damper works softly as wrcll.

As the shock absorber strokes in, the lever ratio gradually decreases and
the spring rate increases. Eventually, wrhcn it is nearly fully stroked in,
the lever ratio becomes small and the spring becomes hard and strong.

Fuel Efficiency

Jn order to maximize the efficiency of the fuel injector, which injects


the optimum amount of fuel for different amounts of intake air, YZF-
R15 is equipped w ith a large 3-liter air cleaner. The duct area of the
intake duct w as designed optimally to optimize the tlowr of intake air.
Additionally, the use of a 4-valve combustion chamber (a combustion
chamber with 2 intake and exhaust valves each) has allowed designers
to layout the spark plug at the center of the combustion chamber for
better flame propagation. This also increases the total valve area
relative to the 2-valve chambers for improved intake exhaust efficiency
(volumetric efficiency), YZF-R15 is fitted with a hemispherical 4-
valve combustion chamber, a configuration that allow's intake and
exhaust valves to be laid out in the smallest size possible.

Summery and conclusion - Rl, MT01

I could start telling you wrhat a great motorcycle the Rl is, but well,
you could just read any review' as everyone seems to have come to
the same conclusion anyway. But I can tell you according to my
research.

For starters, it's quite comfortable on longer rides. A lot of people


complain about getting tired w'rists on an extreme machine like this, but
as long as you don't lean on the clip-oncs too much and ride on nice
twisty roads to keep you busy, it's no problem at all,

Jn the city, it's not the ideal bike, but it docs get me around. As long as
you can get past the lines of cars (which isn't that hard with a small
motorcycle) and you can keep on moving, it's ok. (Well, the problem
with not moving is more in the protective clothing J'm always
wearing when riding my Rl, which can be quite hot when you're not
moving on a hot summer day).
You should never ride an Rl on a highway if you want to have fun.

always looking out for speed camera's and police vehicles ;-) And
most highways don't have many corners anyway.

Of course, the best place to drive an R1 is on a race circuit. We don't


have that many race circuits around here though, so there aren't
a lot of opportunities to ride it there., but the big possibility of
crashing it when racing (in which ease we couldn't afford a
replacement Rl) has kept me from racing it. So wrc just try to find
as many roads as possible wrhich resemble race circuits, to have a lot
of fun on Rl ;-)

And wrhcn you want to take it (relatively) easy, the enormous torque
which the Rl power plant delivers from lowr down makes sure you
don't have to keep the revs up. It's really a quite comfortable
touringbike ;-)
