COMMUNICATION ANALYSIS AND SKILL DEVELOPMENT

PROGRAMME (CASP)

INTRODUCTION:

WHAT IS CASP?
CASP is a course, introducing diploma holders, irrespective of the course, being studied,
to the world of professional communication.

WHY FOR DIPLOMA STUDENTS?

The average engineer walking out of education institution is surprised by the amount of
non-technical work he/she faces in the real world (i.e., personal contact, phone calls, meetings,
reports, presentations etc.).

Further, many cannot find appropriate jobs, in spite of their academic excellence, as
employers complain that, students lack the communication skills.
This course differs from other courses in that, is not taught to the students in a
conventional manner. But, the emphasis will shift from, Teacher--oriented--methods to Student--
oriented--methods. Though the information and skills acquired by all students will be same, the
actual methods and techniques used by each student will vary according to his/her initiative,
individual/group project allotted, effort put in, enthusiasm shown, discussions held and so on.

A CASE STUDY, that revealed, the importance of Informal learning.

Some researchers in the education field, in U.S.A. found that 17 year olds, in a single
academic year, learn about 200 to 300 new words, in a university environment (Formal).
However, during the same period, at their informal home and play environment, they acquire
around 4000 words!! Strangely enough, learning seems to be higher in an informal environment,
than in an academic one, designed specifically for this purpose. This, they found was, because, in
an informal home and play environment, the students learning is self motivated. i.e., the students
learn, as he/she wants to and needs to Fit-in.

OBJECTIVE:
1) To simulate (to make pretence of; to reproduce) an informal learning environment.
2) To provide an ideal opportunity to acquire skills in learning-to-learn, this proves to be
vital for ones professional growth later on.
3) To inculcate Information skills(i.e., Awareness of an idea, details of an idea and where
to look for) into students, which would be life long asset for them - (in fact they grow
with age)
4) To develop written communication skills in students.
5) To develop oral communication skills in students.
