POLYMERS:
A substance which has a molecular structure built up chiefly or completely from a
large number of similar units bonded together, e.g. many synthetic organic
materials used as plastics and resins.
Examples: PVC (poly vinyl chloride), polystyrene, cellulose.
PLASTIC:
a synthetic material made from a wide range of organic polymers such as polyethylene,
PVC, nylon, etc., that can be moulded into shape while soft, and then set into a rigid or
slightly elastic form.
Types of plastics :
Thermoplastic .
Thermo setting plastic .
Thermo plastic :
A substances (especially synthetic resins) that become plastic on heating and
harden on cooling, and are able to repeat these processes.
Thermosetting plastic :
A thermosetting plastic, also known as a thermoset, is polymer material that
irreversibly cures. The cure may be induced by heat, generally above 200 C,
through a chemical reaction, or suitable irradiation.
Formaldehyde is also used as an intermediate to produce other chemicals, many of which play
an important role in the production of coatings and plastics such as polyurethanes.
POLYMERIZATION:
A chemical process that combines several monomers to form a polymer or polymeric
compound.
