Beginning the Lesson
Hello class!
3mins Weve been learning about poems. Who can tell me the literary devices
that we learned already?
- Rhyming, Alliteration, Onomatopoeia etc.

Today we will learn about new kind of poem. Its name is Haiku.
Show them the one Haiku in Japanese.
What kind of language do you think this is?
- Japan
Haiku is a Japanese traditional poem that is mostly about nature.
Most common topic for Haiku is season or weather or nature.

2mins Should we look at the English one?


I will show you an example!

<Rain>
Splish - splash, puddle bath! (splish splash = repeated splashing sound)
raindrops march in spring parade-
wake up, sleepy earth

Look at the Rain together. and practice syllables.
practice syllables by clapping and counting together.
ex: rain-bow,
Lets mark the syllables on Rain
can someone come and mark the first line. (Put a dot under the syllables)
Call different students to mark the second line, and third line too.

5mins Today we are going to write one.


Before that, lets make a word bank.
Our topic is :Nature
what words can you think of when you hear nature?
10 - 15 words.
Nature : Weather - rain, sunny, cloudy, windy,
Mountain, trees, sky, grass, flower, bee, butterfly, bird, pretty, hot, warm,
cold, icy, frigid, forest, ocean, waves, etc.

Count the syllables of the words together and mark the syllables with
dots.

Should we write one all together? : if we have enough time

What is Haiku again?


:Japanese, three lines.
How many syllables in first line? - 5
How many syllables in second line? - 7
How many syllables in third line? - 5
and does it rhyme?

You can use these words or you can come up with your own words.

Closing the Lesson


Students will go back to their seat. and create one or two Haiku poems.
