Solution:
a) Quantities of Excavation
Average of F.S. Readings= (1.5+1.4+1.6+1.3)/4= 1.45m,
Reduced level of Natural Ground= H.I. F.S.= 102 1.45= 100.55 m
Depth of Excavation= R.L. natural ground R.L. bed of excavation= 100.55 99.65 = 0.9 m
Therefore, Quantity of Excavation= L x W x D= (13.5 x 1.8 x 0.9) + (13.5 x 0.4 x 0.3) = 23.49 m
b) Quantities of Concrete
Q1 Footing= (13.5 x 1.8 x 0.5) + (13.5 x 0.4 x 0.3) = 13.77 m
Q2 Retaining Wall: Length = (5.8 + 0.6 x 2) x 2= 14 m
Width = ( = 0.3 m
Q2 Retaining wall= L x W x H = 14m x 0.3m x 4m= 16.8 m . Total Q concrete= 30.57 m
c) Amount of C:S:G
For Footing Concrete with (1:2:4) mix ratio:
13.77= 0.67 (1C + 2C+ 4C) = 0.67 x 7C
C= 2.94 m x 1400 kg/m = 4110 kg/50= 82 bag/20= 4.11 ton
Sand= 2.94 x 2= 5.88 say 6 m
Gravel= 2.94 x 4= 11.76 say 12m
For Concrete Wall with (1:1.5:3) mix ratio:
16.8= 0.67 (1C + 1.5C+ 3C) = 0.67 x 5.5C
C= 4.56 m x 1400 kg/m = 6384 kg/50= 128 bag/20= 6.4 ton
Sand= 4.56 x 1.5= 6.84 say 7 m
Gravel= 4.56 x 3= 13.68 say 14 m
Total Cement= 10.5 ton, total sand= 13m , total gravel= 26m

Solution:
a) Net quantity of brickwork:
Length= [(6.34 + 1.17+ 3 + 3.14 x 1.67 + 13.67 x 2) 2 x 0.5 x 0.34] x 2 = 83.51 m
Q = L x W x H = 83.51 x 0.34 x 4 = 113.57 m
Deduction= [4 x (2 x 2.3) + 6 x (3 x 1.5)] x 0.34 = - 15.44 m
Net Q brickwork= 113.57 98.13 m
b) Number of bricks:
For 1 m , number of bricks= 1 / (0.24 x 0.12 x 0.08)= 434
For this building, number of bricks= 98.13 m x 434= 42, 589
Quantity of mortar with a mix ratio of (1:3):
Volume of mortar= 98.13 42589 (0.23 x 0.11 x 0.07) = 22.70 m
22.70 = 0.75 (1C + 3C)
C= m x 1400 kg/m = kg/50= bag/20= ton of cement
Sand= x = say m
c) Height of a continuous tie-beam over the doors and windows
Height of walls = 4 m
Lower level of the continuous tie beam= 2.3 m (as the height of doors is 2.3m)
Difference= 4 2.3 m= 1.7m
Assume min. height of tie beam= 0.34m (as it should not be less than the width of the wall)
Thus, remaining height to the ceiling= 1.36m
Check the practicability of full-brick layers: 1.36/ 0.08 = 17 layers exactly. Hence, 0.34m height is OK.
Quantity of Tie-beam= 83.51 (net length as before) x 0.34 x 0.34= 9.65 m
Exact Q brickwork= 98.13 88.48 m
