Activities/Procedures
During an informational presentation the students will be reintroduced to the artist
Pablo Picasso. Students created a clay mask inspired by Picasso last year so the
presentation will be an overview. During the presentation students will also be
given an overview of cubism and the collage technique. Students will be
introduced to the artist Sonia Delaunay and how her work was inspired by the
Cubist style. Students will be familiarized with Picassos use of recycled materials.
A short discussion will be held about the importance of recycling and how they
currently recycle in the art classroom. Students will be informed that they will need
to bring a soda can from their home for next class to incorporate within their Can
Man portrait. Students will be informed that a beer can is not appropriate for
school, but any nonalcoholic can will work and will show the diversity within the
classroom. Examples of the recycled can man portrait they will be creating will be
shown. The lesson objective will be clearly communicated: Create a Can Man
portrait with recycled materials while using the Cubist style and the Collage
technique.
During an interactive demonstration students will be shown how to create a room
using one-point perspective. During this demonstration students will be creating
their own one-point perspective drawing of a room using a pencil, ruler and a
7x9 piece of poster board.
Students will decorate the walls of the room with patterns drawn with colored
markers.
Short demonstration on how we will be painting the can mans face will take place.
Students will be given a quick overview on frontal and profile views and simplified
geometric shapes used in Picassos artworks.
Students will be shown an example of a painted can man face. Students will have
the rest of the class period to create their can man face in the cubist style.
A short demonstration on how to create the shirt for the can man out of fabric and
the hair out of colored foam sheets will take place. Students will have time to
create the shirt and the hair for their can man. The shirt and hair must be glued
down with Elmers glue and the can will be glued down with a hot glue gun.
