Futures so bright we gotta wear shades?
Yesterday our D.C. students, along with a group
from Chinook, were at the National Aquarium. Along
with touching manta rays, star fish, jellyfish, viewing
sharks dolphins and other marine life, they took in a
4-D movie. The Aquariums 4-D Immersion Theater
is equipped with 4-D capabilities, which combine
the high-definition drama of a 3-D film with special
sensory effects that are built into the theater seats and
environment. Films are transformed into 15-minute
experiences that bring on-screen images virtually to
life with special effects, such as mist, wind, snow,
bubbles, leg ticklers, scents, enhanced lighting and
seat vibrations! They also contain theatrical lighting,

including strobe lights. This morning they were off on
an hour-and-a-half bus ride (a little extra sleep for
some of them) to Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, to visit
the National Military Park. The Battle of Gettysburg
was a turning point in the Civil War, the Union victory
that ended General Robert E. Lees second and most
ambitious invasion of the North. Often referred to as
the High Water Mark of the Rebellion, Gettysburg
was the Civil Wars bloodiest battle and was also the
inspiration for President Abraham Lincolns immortal

all the incredible history of the battlefield.

Civil Wars bloodiest battle

Part of the Gettysburg tour was a rather somber visit to the award
winning, state of the art museum in the adaptively reused 1832 Lutheran
Seminary building that housed a seminary, was the critical lookout on
the first day of the Battle, became a field hospital, and fielded the 19th
century debates about faith and slavery. Students got to see the tools
of the trade that doctors had to work with in those days.

Montana Tales and Trails: Look Out, Its Spring

Some things in life we can delay, stop, even ignore
without consequence. The changing seasons are not in
that category.
Animals, like gophers, (yes, we know their correct
name is Richardsons ground squirrel), are much more
in tune than us with the changing seasons. They have to
be, their lives and their species survival depends on it.
We can skip putting in a garden this year, but well
still eat. We dont have to change the furnace filter but
the furnace will still work, though with more difficulty
and probably sock us with a higher heating bill.
Gophers have a specific time period to come out
of hibernation, breed, birth, then get ready for winter
again. Also on the time clock are migrating raptors
that know where to perch in March, waiting for those
loveable rodents that have trouble crossing roads safely
to pop up from underground.
Like it or not, spring is coming at us right now like
a high-ballin freight train.
By the end of March, Canada geese will be sitting
on nests full of eggs, which will hatch out in a month,
and western meadowlarks will be warbling their liquid
song. Robins will soon be appearing in a yard near you.
Red-winged blackbirds are not far behind.
Other March signs of onrushing spring include
mature bull elk dropping their antlers, rainbow trout in
reservoirs, like Holter, cruising the shoreline looking for
a place to spawn, and reports of grizzlies out of their
dens on the Rocky Mountain Front.
Its unclear what causes a bear to emerge from its
winter den, especially when the den is buried with

Warming temperatures, increasing day length,
snow melting around a den entrance, and the smells
of spring probably all play a role. Eventually bears will
move from their high elevation dens to lower, warmer
habitats, looking for early green plants.
In a lush, wet spring, plants like angelica and cow
parsnip dominate the menu and life is good.
If the prairie is too dry, theres not much to eat and
conflicts between bears and humans may happen.
This year, however, it would appear that a dry spring
may be the least of our worries. This spring should be a
good one for fish, frogs and boat salesmen.
