When there is a potential H2S hazard, the employee shall


use the provided respiratory protection in accordance with
instructions and training received

Safety measures
When approaching the job site note the following:
1. Observe condition signs e.g. audio/visual alarms
2. Check for wind direction (wind sock)
3. Take note of other personnel and their activity
4. Enter the site slowly
5. Observe the escape routes
6. Make sure your have the appropriate monitoring
equipment e.g. gas detectors
7. NO SMOKING!
8. You have received H2S training

Step 1 : Evacuate

get to safe area immediately


Move upwind if release is downwind of you
Move crosswind if release is upwind of you
Move to higher ground if possible
Do not attempt to save anyone without proper
protection

Step 2 : Alarm

Get to the nearest safe communications station and


sound the alarm, horn,yelp tone, whistle or whatever
is designated as the H2S warning device
Report "H2S man Down"
Report where the release is located

Step 3 : Assess
Assess the situation before making irratioanal
mistakes
Muster if appropriate and determine if anyone
else is missing or in the area of release
Consider other hazards
Make your assessment quickly but safely

Step 4 : Protect

Put on breathing apparatus before attempting rescue

Protect yourself with appropriate breathing

You may consider bringing another set of BA for the
casualty if it is difficult to move them

Step 5 : Rescue
Remove victim to a safe area (muster point)

Step 6 : Revive
Apply rescue breathing if necessary
Revive by appliying artificial respiration if
necessary
Allow experienced FIrst Aid prsonnel to teke
over if available

Step 7 : Medical Aid

Arrange transport of victim to medical aid


Provide information to emergency medical
services
