1. BACKGROUND

The Arts is an important aspect in shaping the individual

and the society. Apart from being a hobby and a form of
entertainment, it can teach everyone life skills such as patience,
problem-solving, creativity, and diligence. As a national entity,
the Philippine government has always cited the Arts as a proof
of a genuine Filipino identity that we can be proud of.
Reception to the Performing Arts has not been very
warm in the country. While there are existing institutions
actively engaged in this discipline, there is a lack in the response
of the Filipinos as an audience to many forms of the Arts.
Appreciation of the Arts usually needs a genuine interest or at
least a background in its elements. Quality education is lacking
in the country, which narrows down the audience for the Arts
and its success.
In order to ensure the future of the Performing Arts, we
must start back at the education level. Seeing students as the
foundation for a bright future of the Performing Arts, there is a
need to reinforce the current education in this field.
The study a Center of the Performing Arts for the
University of the Philippines Diliman is a response to the task of
designing a new development to occupy the present whereabouts
of the UP Tennis Courts along the Academic Oval, specifically
located on Osmea Ave. corner Roces St. The center was
conceived after consideration of the sites proximity to various
establishments of the performing arts, the importance of the
performing arts as a medium of education and the vision of UP
as an institution of holistic academic learning.
The center is envisioned to play support to the existing
formal education provided for the performing arts in the campus
through the development of students in the academe: the
performing arts students as future-performers and the non-
performing arts students as an enlightened audience and even as
potential participants in the performance arts themselves.
