School of Cultures, Languages and Area Studies

Postgraduate Research Fund 2016-2017

Applications are invited from postgraduate research (MA by Research, MRes and PhD) students in
the School of CLAS for funding to support essential activities related to their research. Such
activities may include: research trips, presenting a paper at a conference, or the organisation or a
conference, symposium or research-related event that will be of direct benefit to the thesis.

CLAS postgraduate research awards are discretionary and competitive. Priority will be given to
awards that are (a) of direct benefit to a students research project and overall research profile
and (b) part-funded from another source (e.g. Graduate School or research council).

Awards are limited to ONE per student per year except in cases where a student makes a joint
application with (an)other student(s) in the School (e.g. for conference organisation*). Students
funded by the AHRC Midlands3Cities DTP should apply to the specific research support fund
schemes provided by the DTP (e.g. SDF or CDF) rather than apply for the School Postgraduate
Research Fund.

Students who are in thesis pending or writing up are eligible to apply.

Applications are limited to a maximum of 500 per applicant and must be fully costed with
supporting documentation attached.

Applications should be made on the CLAS application form BEFORE the research event takes
place. Retrospective applications are not accepted. Completed applications with statements of
support from supervisors should reach the Senior Student Services Administrator (Jo Pullen) no
later than noon on 7 November 2016, 6 February 2017 or 8 May 2017.

Applicants will be informed of the outcome of their application within three weeks of the closing
date. If you are successful, you will be expected to make your travel bookings through the CLAS
Purchasing Team (CLAS-purchasing@nottingham.ac.uk) to ensure that you are covered by
University travel insurance. For reimbursement of expenses incurred, a non-staff expense claim
form along with scanned copies of the receipts should be emailed to the Purchasing Team with
EXPENSE CLAIM PGR award in the subject line. More information is available on Workspace.

*To support student initiatives which will enhance the student experience and contribute to
fostering a sense of academic community, please be aware that there is a School Student
Experience Fund that would be the appropriate source of funding. More information can be found
by logging in to Workspace and clicking the link above or by contacting Stuart Wright at
stuart.wright@nottingham.ac.uk.

Project Outline
Please provide a brief description of your planned research trip/activity and its relation to your
research project. This should include a summary of the benefits that will be derived from the
trip/activity and specific details of why this funding would be of value at this particular time in
your research (500 words maximum).

The International Medieval Congress held in Leeds is an annual research event during
which scholars working on all aspects of medieval studies share their research, and there
are two intended goals of my planned research trip to attend this conference. Funding to
attend this event will first allow me to present and receive feedback regarding a paper I
have been invited to present at the conference, entitled Runic Usage as Other in
Cynewulfs Fates of the Apostles. This specific paper has been excised from my current
PhD research into modern and medieval multilingualism as both relate to the use of
multiple character systems. The specific paper deals with Old English multilingualism,
and it will prove particularly useful at this relatively early stage to get objective
responses and criticism to my work, since these will allow me to make informed
adjustments that will beneficially shape the remaining course of my analysis.

Being able to attend will also be beneficial to my research on a broader scale, however,
since the conferences scope is rather large and the interdisciplinary focus of the 2017
event is on concepts of otherness. In addition to relating directly to the medieval
elements, this theme is also central to the modern aspects of my research, which
addresses English and foreign language influence on Japanese literature. Attendance will
prove invaluable at this formative stage in my own interdisciplinary research, since it
will allow me to be audience to papers across an array of fields being presented on this
critical subject. Being able to witness how other scholars have addressed and continue to
address foreignness and otherness in different academic disciplines and even more
importantly, across disciplinary lines, will help to guide not simply my research topic,
but also my ongoing and future research process and methodology.
