Community Analysis for Crockett Intermediate School

Built in 1963, Crockett was initially home to 500 7th, 8th, and 9th graders. Since

then it has undergone several changes, housing 6th and 7th grade, and currently 5th and 6th

grades. Originally the Crockett Volunteers with the colors orange and white, Crockett has

now joined the rest of Paris Independent School District as the Wildcats with the district

colors of navy and white. Crockett has been home to six principals over the last 53 and

seen many changes in curriculum and teachers. Currently Crockett is a five star rated

campus and a Texas Middle School to Watch. The mission statement of Crockett

Intermediate School is to provide students with a safe and caring environment in order to

achieve the skills they need to thrive as independent, productive thinkers, and to be

lifelong learners.

Crockett is located in the town of Paris, Texas, a rural town with a population of

close to 26,000 residents. The median age is 36 years old, with an average family size of

2.4. The average household income is $27,438, well below the state average of $39,927,

resulting in 16% households living below the poverty line. Unemployment is just above

the national average at 5.5%, but Paris has seen a positive increase in job growth thanks

to new companies coming in. The cost of living in Paris is 23% lower than the national

average.

Crockett is a rural school, with many of the same challenges as an urban school.

Current enrollment is currently 520 students, a 30% increase from the 2015-2016 school

year. Seventy-six percent of Crockett students are economically disadvantaged, with

55% considered at risk. The current population consists of 36% White, 31% African
American, 27% Hispanic, 4% Two or more races, and 2% other. Fourteen percent of

students are English Language Learners. Despite the high number of economically

disadvantaged students, the attendance rate is above the state average. Due to the high

number of low-income families, Paris ISD qualifies for the Community Eligibility

Provision of the National School Lunch and School Breakfast Program, which allows all

students to receive free lunch and breakfast.

Crockett has a large group of students who are identified as Gifted and Talented.

Fifteen percent of students are identified as GT, compared to the state average of 7.6%.

Crockett is also above the state average in Special Education students with 11%. The

2016-2017 school year brought the addition of a Functional Life Skills classroom to the

Crockett campus. All Crockett staff is highly qualified with a student teacher ratio of

approximately 11:1. There has been a high turnover rate the last two years with a change

in administration, with 54% of staff having less than eleven years of teaching experience.

State STAAR scores were delayed, with the third administration being cancelled.

Fifth grade math scores were 81% met standard, with a state standard of 86%. Fifth grade

reading scores were 69% (state was 80%) Sixth grade math scores were above the state

average at 73.5% (72 state), reading scores were 71% with a state standard of 69%. Fifth

grade also tests science, which received a 55% passing rate, while the state standard was

set at 74%. Safeguards were not met in Special Education for math, reading, or science.

To improve STAAR scores for the 2016-2017 school year, many changes have been

implemented. Inclusion and core teachers received training in Co-Teaching; there is a

weekly hands on science lab scheduled through science classes, and intervention classes

taught by certified teachers.

Funding for the school library comes from local and Title 1 funds. For the 2015-

2016 school year Title 1 funds increased to $5,470, allowing local funds to increase to

$3,600. The increase in funding allowed the library budget to increase from $5 per

student to $10 per students. Currently there are 13.1 items per student, with a goal of 25

items per student. The library is home to 7,100 items in its collection, 58% of which are

fiction books and 42% being non-fiction. The average age of publication is 2003. The

collection includes 6,717 titles currently.
