Personal Mission Statement

I signed up for the Leadership Certificate Program to get more involved on campus and I

believe that this program can at least help me develop and muster traits needed to engage in

anything from self-volunteering to joining and taking part of an organization or group.

Leadership plays a huge role in working with others and a good leader has the ability to

communicate and collaborate effectively within a group, while motivating others to achieve their

goals. From my experience and understanding, a leaders main qualities should include

inspiration, commitment, vision, and a passion that drives them to achieve common interests or

evoke positive change.

As a leader, I have developed values that guide me when I work towards my goals. I

value commitment, adaptability, consistency, and selflessness. Commitment is paramount when

working in groups because it allows members to participate through involvement and is

beneficial when working towards any goal. Consistency is also important. Any group or

organization cannot function without the constant participation and attendance of its members.

Adaptability allows for flexibility in any situation or environment especially in regards to people

because no interaction is the same. Selflessness is a great way to contribute to others without the

expectation of something in return and when working within a group its best to think in terms of

the entirety of the group. I follow these four core values when I make decisions and goals to

ensure that I am always abiding by them.

My personal life goals are to work for the government on real-world environmental

projects that would potentially benefit society and promote the sustainability of our environment.

With these goals, I aspire to be a leader among co-workers by creating a positive, productive

work environment by modeling service before self and a commitment to a cause that benefits
society. By learning a variety of leadership skills, I will be able to express my leadership style in

a way that can help me achieve my goals, while encouraging others to achieve theirs.

While in the Leadership Certificate Program I my goals are to develop my leadership

skills. I hope to better understand my leadership style and learn how to maximize my potential as

a leader among different types of groups.

S.M.A.R.T. Goals

Getting more involved on campus through student programs and volunteering is a great

way to develop leadership skills and cooperative involvement with others. I understand that

while Im on campus I have an abundance of opportunities to volunteer, join a registered student

organization, or a club that would allow me to be more involved in the Champaign-Urbana

community. I am a senior and will be graduating in a semester, so I understand that I have a few

months to get involved. The office of volunteer programs provides informational resources for

students who are willing to serve. Im expecting that I can get at least one day to commit to

volunteering. Five months exactly is when Ill be graduating so I think I can at least participate in

volunteering work for the next five months to accomplish this goal.

Completing the Leadership Certificate Program before I graduate is the one goal that I

have prioritized. Im involved in this program to improve my leadership skills but also to give

myself more opportunities to participate on campus outside of the classroom setting. The

Leadership Certificate Program is typically completed in about three semesters but Im

graduating soon and Im expecting to finish before the end of the Fall semester. Seeing that I

graduate in the Spring semester, I dont have a lot of time so it would be best for me to make this

a top priority goal.
