CHAPTER 1

This chapter presents the different essential elements: The introduction which contains the rationale (the

reasons why the researchers conducted the research) the setting where the research will be conducted, the

basic literature foundation of the study, the general objective of the problem and its overall purpose. This

also presents the scope of the research and its delimitation, the statement of the problem and the

significance of the said research.

INTRODUCTION

Most of the teenagers today lack self-esteem that hinders them to express themselves well

especially in front of the class. It can be seen well when having reports and individual speeches. The

factors that cause this should be known in order to do an action to develop the self-esteem of an

individual especially to the ABM students which is very important in the future when dealing with

customers, employees and investors.

Julia Miraflores, an ABM 1-A senior HS student of San Agustin experiences this difficulty of

expressing herself in front of the class when having her individual speech. This results for low volume of

voice while speaking, trembling, inattentive listeners and low grades.

University of San Agustin is one of the schools that offer the ABM course in Senior High School

which is pre- requisite in courses such as Economics, Business Administration, Accountancy and

Marketing. Students that will pursue these courses will more likely encounter a large number of people

by which is basically related to their line of work. It is imperative to have a great self-esteem when you

are taking this kind of course in order to excel and establish a good relationship with other people.

Self-esteem encompasses beliefs about one self, examples are: I am competent, I am worthy.

Smith and Mackie (2007) defined it by saying The self-concept is what we think about the self; self-

esteem, is the positive or negative evaluations of the self, as in show we feel about it. Self-esteem is
attractive as a social psychological construct because researchers have conceptualized it as an influential

predictor of certain outcomes, such as academic achievement, happiness, satisfaction in marriage and

relationships, and criminal behavior. Self-esteem is important because it shows ourselves how we view

the way we are and the sense of our personal value. Thus, it affects the way we are and act in the world

and the way we are related to everybody else.

Earlier studies shows that if you have low self -esteem you are prone to stress and anxiety. It will

hard for this kind of people to get motivated because they always assume that they will fail. This also

deals with relationship troubles, it is hard for those people to create and maintain good and healthy

relationship which is essential when having a business. And also a person who lacks confidence will not

be able to try or explore new things for the improvement of ones business for thinking that it wont have

a good result.

The goal of this study is to determine the factors that hinder to the development of the ABM

students in order to find solution on how students can cope up with the fear of facing and showing

themselves to the people as they express themselves.

The purpose of the research is to help the students to improve not just their self-esteem but also

themselves so that they will be successful business/woman in the future who is able to help other people

by giving them job opportunities.

to be given. University of San Agustin- in the study is the school where the ABM students are studying

the school where the interview is to be conducted.

SCOPE AND DELIMITATION

This study is concerned in finding the factors that hinders the ABM student of the University of

San Agustin to develop their confidence. Selected ABM students in the USA were the respondents of the

study. Other academic strand students such as STEM, HUMMS, & GAS were not included since the

study only focuses on selected ABM students. Teachers, Faculty & Staff were not also included as well as

personnel outside the University. This study will be conducting an interview containing the reasons on

why they have low self-esteem and how they deal with this kind of situation. This study conducted an

interview containing the following: the causes effects, reasons of their low self-esteem and how they deal

with the situation. After said interview is assumed that we can already identify the factors. Prior to the

conceptualization of the interview, the data gatherings procedure will be conducted from January to

March.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

Most of the students have low self-esteem. Students have low psychological thinking for

themselves. There must be something from the past that triggers them to lose the trust that they have in

their own self and ability. An example of this is the criticisms that they have receive from others, this

study also shows the behavior of a person who have low self-esteem.
The information that we had gathered in this research will serve as a basis for the study. By this

study, the researchers will spread awareness to overcome this problem. The researchers will conduct an

interview that shows the statistics of the students who have low self-esteem. The findings of this study

will benefit the ABM students, who have low self-esteem, considering that the students of ABM strand

should develop their self-esteem in their studies and in their inter and intra personal relationship towards

others which is essential in the future when they deal with the people and when they handle with their

own businesses. The researchers will conduct an interview to the ABM students to know the cause and

effect of having low self-esteem. This will give awareness to the ABM students to overcome their fear of

expressing themselves towards others, for them to gain confidence in everything and to not be afraid of

doing things that can help them to develop.

The benefactors will be the following:

1. ABM students

2. Those people who lacks self confidence
