Resistance

1. Define electrical resistance.

2. Write down the relationship between Potential difference, current and resistance. (In words and in
symbols)
3. Draw the symbol for resistance.
4. Explain what is meant by resistivity.
5. How does the electrical resistance of a wire affected by i) the length of the wire, ii) the cross
sectional area of the wire, and iii) the material out of which the wire is made?
You can start of with… ‘the longer the wire, the …. the electrical resistance. The …… the
wire, the….” and so on.
6. Express the resistivity, length of wire, cross-sectional area and resistance all in one formula. Please
use symbols and write down the unit of each of them.
7. The note below shows what if resistors are connected together in series and parallel. The final
formula for the calculation is in the box, the rest of what you see is the explanation on how to get
to that final result. Study it and try a few questions on the next page.
