I could still remember a terrifying experience. It was 10 oclock at night. I was standing at the bus
stop to catch a bus home. Then, I saw two men entering a shop. They looked suspicious.
Suddenly, I heard a woman shouting, Help! Help! I looked around in that direction and saw one of
them - a big-sized man held up a woman with a knife at her neck. He was trying to rob her of her gold chain
and cash.
I quickly hid behind a big tree and saw all that was happening. The two men were threatening the
poor lady. She was crying and pleading for help.
I raced to the nearest telephone booth and called the police. Just as I was putting down the phone, I
saw two policemen on patrol. I told them what was happening.
Immediately, they rushed to where the lady was. The robbers saw the police and took to their heels
in different directions. The policemen chased them and managed to catch one of them.
After a while, I heard a siren. The police car was chasing the other robber. Finally, the second robber
was also caught.
The lady thanked me and the police congratulated me. They also praised me for my bravery and

UNIT 11 THE HUNT

Suggested answer

The Hunt

One evening I went to an estate near Selanchar in Pahang. A report stated that a tiger was seen on the
outskirts of the estate. So, with two Game Rangers, I set out to shoot a wild boar to use as bait. However, the
task was more difficult than I had expected.

I took up my position near a big rubber tree on the edge of the bushes and waited patiently for the
wild boars to appear. For some time nothing happened; then there was a slight movement in the bushes. A
startled jungle fowl darted across the clearing. I expected trouble and looked for it.

The dark head of a big wild boar suddenly appeared through the leaves of the shorter bushes. In
silence, he surveyed the scene for a few moments before he moved out of the bushes. He was followed
immediately by two sows and a few smaller pigs. In single file, they entered the rows of rubber trees about
thirty metres away.

I waited until the procession had reached a spot about twenty metres from me. Then I picked up my
shotgun, aimed for the neck and shoulder of the boar and fired. At the shot, he staggered slightly. His lips
curled back from the long, sharp tusks. Without any hesitation, he gathered himself together and charged

vii
straight at me. I fired again when he was only about fifteen metres away but the shot had no effect on him. I
heard it strike his thick, dry hide and learnt later that it had merely grazed him. There was only one thing left
to do - and I did it as fast as possible! I jumped behind the tree and made a leap upwards to escape from the
injured wild boar. Unfortunately, the tree was large and there were no branches low enough for me to reach. I
slid straight down again and sat on the ground facing the tree trunk. The boar hurtled past me, brushed the
tree and disappeared into the acres of rubber trees. I was not physically injured but I was disappointed that I
could not kill the boar. There was nothing else to do but to give up the hunt for that evening.

The next day, some rubber tappers found the wild boar dead about half a kilometre away from the
bushes. The carcass showed that my first shot had been accurate enough. Surprisingly, the boar had still
managed to travel more than four hundred metres although it was dying.

A Fire

Last Friday morning, a fire broke out at a textile factory in Batu Pahat. One of the factory workers
named Nazim saw smoke coming out of the first floor of the building. He immediately raised the alarm.
Quickly, Nazim and some colleagues went round the factory shouting, Fire! Fire! On being alerted, the
other workers who were busy at the production line immediately scrambled out of the factory. By then the
fire had spread and the entire first floor was covered with smoke.

The fire-brigade was immediately notified and within minutes, fifty firemen arrived in seven fire-
engines. Commander Mahmud who was in charge, ordered a team of firemen into the burning factory to
locate the source of the fire and to put it out. The rest of the firemen who were wearing snorkels fought the
fire from below.

When we reached the first floor of the factory, we found that the fire had started from a store-room
there, said Sergeant Raman, a senior fireman. The store-room was for keeping the textiles that were to be
exported. As the textiles were inflammable, the fire spread very rapidly.

Trinh Chung, a worker of Vietnamese origin, said, I was very shocked when I heard Nazims shouts.
At that time I was working at the weaving machine. Without wasting any time, I alerted all the other workers
in my section and we made our way out of the burning factory. Meanwhile, another worker named Abu
Bakar, a local, had fallen down while trying to escape. As a result, he had to be carried out by his colleagues
to safety. Fortunately, none of the other workers were injured.

It took the firemen an hour to bring the fire under control. What damage did the fire cause? The
factory manager, Encik Mustafa Hakam, said, The entire first floor of the factory was destroyed. The stocks
in the store-room alone cost two hundred thousand ringgit. The damages are estimated at around one million
ringgit.

No one knew how the fire had started. However, it was suspected to be caused by a short circuit.
Nevertheless, the police would be carrying out their investigations, together with the fire department.

UNIT 2 - THE PERSON I ADMIRE MOST

TASK 1

Appearance long hair, short-sighted

Personality helpful, cheerful

Dislikes snakes, durians

Likes eating, reality TV shows

Hobbies watching TV programmes, surfing the Internet

ix
TASK 2

THE PERSON I ADMIRE MOST

I have a wonderful sister. Her name is Joanne Ai Ling. I admire her a lot. I would like to describe her
appearance, personality, hobbies, likes and dislikes.
First and foremost, I would like to describe her appearance. She has long black hair. She wears a
pair of spectacles because she is short-sighted. She has worn glasses since she was in Standard Three.
I really like her personality. She is a unique person. She is very helpful. She always helps me to
complete my homework, especially Mathematics. She never gets upset because she is a cheerful person.
Everyone likes her.
She and I share the same hobbies, which are watching TV programmes and surfing the Internet.
She likes to watch Korean dramas and reality TV shows. She always surfs the Internet during her free time
and she knows what happens all around the world.
She has some likes. One thing that she really likes is eating. She loves eating pizza, burger and
chicken rice. She also likes watching reality TV shows, for example Akademi Fantasia and Fear Factor.
She also has her dislikes. She dislikes the durian because its smell is strong and stinky. She also
dislikes reptiles like snakes.
Based on the above reasons, I admire my sister so much. I always pray that she will succeed in her
life. She is a great sister.

UNIT 3 - THE PERSON WHO HAS INFLUENCED ME

TASK 1

She had been with me for twenty three years of my life. When she passed away in the third year of my
bachelor degree, I experienced such a great loss that I felt like giving up my studies. My grandmother
needed me by her side but I had left her to go for further studies.
My grandmother was the one to spur me on to higher academic pursuits. Few would expect this of her
since she hardly had any education in China. She got married at eighteen and migrated to Malaysia when
she was twenty without knowing much about the world. Due to her lack of education, she felt an intense
desire to see her children and grandchildren succeed academically. She sat by me doing her patchwork
blanket while I did my homework. When there were examinations, she woke me up an hour or so earlier so
that I could read through my notes for the last time.
She was five foot and was rather plump. Her thin legs and miniature feet looked as if they could not
withstand her weight. Yet, they did, all through the ninety years of her life. Her silvery grey hair was
thinning. I loved gazing at her gentle face which did not bear the creases of worries and frustrations.
My grandmother was optimistic. When she left China, she could not afford to buy clothes for her
children. By sheer determination, she learnt how to sew and managed to pass the skills on to my sisters and
me. When workers were laid off during the recession, she helped my grandfather in the rubber estate
although she was weak. From her, I learnt how important it was to keep trying
and not give up hope.
My grandmother was a very loving person. Even when her children had grown up, she did not stop
caring for them. At eighty, she could still prepare chicken soup for my father when he had an appendicitis
operation. She did not pick quarrels with my mother, unlike the proverbial mother-in-law. Instead, she
loved my mother like her daughter. Her abundant love overflowed to her neighbours and their children.
Although my grandmother has passed away, her presence is still felt in my family. We remember her
wise words and love which brought our extended family together.

UNIT 4: A FESTIVAL CELEBRATED IN MALAYSIA

TASK1

Hari Raya begins in the heart of Muslims three to four months before the special day itself. This is the
time when they go to the tailors for the baju kurung and baju Melayu. Those who go too late find that
they need to buy clothes off the shelf at boutiques and departmental stores.
The countdown begins with the fasting month, Ramadhan. The fast starts at the moment when it is
possible to distinguish between a white thread and a black thread held against the rising sun. It ends at
sunset when the last rays of the sun disappear. A spirit of joy is felt at the breaking of fast which usually

x
begins with sweets and cold drinks. These can be bought at the stalls which mushroom all over the place.
Working parents usually stop by these stalls on their way home from work. The fasting is as much a part of
Hari Raya as the day itself.
In the last one or two weeks before Hari Raya, there is a flurry of activities in the Muslim homes. The
women are on their feet most of their free time baking many types of cakes and cookies. The men paint
their houses and clear the garden to prepare for the day. This is also the time when new curtains are put up.
In some homes, the old furniture is traded in for new designs. The adults usually get very tired preparing
for Hari Raya but children love this busy atmosphere.
On the Hari Raya day itself, they are all set to welcome visitors. Everything looks new, from the food to
the carpet. There would be curry, rendang and ketupat for visitors who come in the morning of the
first day. By afternoon, these delicacies have disappeared but there are plenty of cakes and other savoury
food to last a whole month.
Hari Raya is the time for keeping in touch because people are too busy to visit one another at other times
of the year. Visiting elders and relatives is a must. Hari Raya is a joyous time, not only for Muslims but
also for non-Muslims because this is the time for them to strengthen the ties with their Muslim friends.

UNIT 5 - MY NEW HOUSE

TASK 1

3, 1, 4, 2, 5, 6

UNIT 6 - A NIGHT MARKET

TASK 1

A. Sense of smell stinking smell, sweet aroma, mixture of different fragrances etc.
B. Sense of hearing loud voices, cries of children, shouts of stall owners etc.
C. Sense of sight dirty with sweet wrappers everywhere, crowded with people, a variety of food and
drinks etc.
D. Sense of touch wet fish, rough and thorny durians etc.
E. Sense of taste sour, sweet, bitter, salty etc.

TASK 2

THE NIGHT MARKET

Night markets are found all over Malaysia. They are found in big cities, housing estates and
villages. These night markets are set up on fixed days of the week. It can be Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday or
any other day of the week. Sometimes they are called by the names of the day on which they appear such as
Monday Market, Tuesday Market and so on.
The stall owners usually go to the site early in the evening in their vans or lorries. With a lot of
experience, they can set up their stalls and arrange their things within a short period of time. Their stalls are
usually arranged on both sides of the roads to make it easier for shoppers to go to their stalls. The bright
lights of the stalls give the place a festival-like atmosphere.

The variety of things sold at night markets are truly amazing. There are _fruit stalls selling
bananas, papayas, rambutans, langsat, jackfruits, water-melons and durians. There are also stalls selling all
sorts of food and drinks . The drinks tempt one to come to their stalls. The aroma of spiced, deep-fried
chicken greets even long before one comes near the stalls selling it. Fried noodles and vermicelli garnished
with browned garlic, sliced chillies and chopped spring onions look more like works of art than food to be
eaten. It is true that the food is feast for the eyes as well as the stomach. The food stalls also sell satay,
popiah and murtabak. Isnt it any surprise that many families eat out on night market days?

xi
There are also stalls selling costume jewellery and fashion accessories. The fake jewellery looks
the real with its imitation diamonds and jewels. Women and young girls are attracted to these stalls. The
watch sellers are also there with their glass cases of cheap imitation watches. The watches look no different
from the much more expensive genuine ones. A customer can buy a Rolex for less than forty ringgit! The
stalls attracting many children are the ones selling toys. The noisiest stalls are the ones selling music
cassettes and video compact discs. Music and other sounds come forth from their gigantic loudspeakers or
television sets. People go to the night market for a variety of reasons. Many of them go there not to buy
anything but to watch other people. Genuine shoppers are also plentiful. Many also go there to eat. The rest
go there to enjoy the sights and sounds of the night markets.
