Function: Expressing Concern, Giving and Receiving Advice

RATIONALE

When someone has a problem, it is polite to express concern. Sometimes listeners also

want to offer some advice. It is polite to express thanks when students receive advice. Generally,

expressions for expressing concern, giving polite advice and receiving advice are important and

necessary for students at this level. Students at this level should be exposed to a variety of forms.

OBJECTIVES
Students will be able to express concern, give polite advice and receive advice by using

target expressions with 90% accuracy.

Students will be able to summarize their troubles, solutions and reasons with at least 80%

accuracy.

Lesson Plan Phases:

1. Warm up (2 min.)

T greets Ss.

T says: Well, class. Recently, I have a big trouble. I cannot get enough sleeping time

because I am so busy. Do you guys have any trouble recently?

T asks Ss to talk about somethings that trouble them recently with their partners within 1

minute.

2. Presentation (6 min)

T asks one S: May I know what difficulty you are facing recently? S answers. T says: I am

so sorry to hear that. T asks another S: Whats the matter? S answers. T says: Thats too

bad. T asks Ss: When I say I am sorry to hear that, whats the matter, thats too bad, what

am I doing? Ss may answer: You are expressing concerns.

T asks Ss: Can you give me more expressions to express concerns? Ss answer and T

writes them on the board in one line. If Ss cannot mention all of target expressions, T gives

Ss hints.

T gives advice to students who said their trouble just now: Why dont you? or Have

you tried? T asks: Well, what am I doing when I say why dont you and have you tried?

Ss may answer: You are giving advice.

T asks: Can you list more expressions for giving advice? Ss answer and T writes them on

the board in another line.

T asks: Suppose someone else gives his advice to you. When you receiving advice, what

should you say to respond him? Ss answer and T writes them on the board in the third line.

T gives a title for each line such as expressing concerns, giving advice and receiving advice.

3. Practice (10 min)

T gives the handout to Ss, and says Look at the chart with health problems and ways. Have

a conversation with your partner by using target expressions. Come up with two more ways

to prevent each problem and add them to the chart.

T then models the example to Ss.

T gives Ss five minutes to do the practice. When Ss do the practice, T walks around and

monitors.

T calls on each pair to give one suggestion for one problem.

4. Production (20 min)

T gives Ss handouts and divides Ss into group of four. T says Think of one thing that

troubles you recently and write it down. It can be the trouble that you mentioned at the

beginning of the class. Then walk around the classroom and talk to three other students.

Write down their suggestions, Practice expressing concern, giving polite advice and

receiving advice. You can refer to the example in the Practice.

T gives Ss five minutes to do the step 1. T monitors students during the activity.

T says Choose the best solution you think. Give your reason briefly and report your trouble

and best solution in your group. When you are listening to others, you are supposed to take

notes in the chart below.

T then models the example to Ss.

5. Wrap up (2min)

T reviews target language with Ss.

T gives Ss an assignment. T asks Ss to write a 150- word summary about members

problems, solutions and reasons based on the notes chart in the Production part.
