Learning outcomes Knowledge of using the computer program for velocity and pressure distributions in
channels of different shapes.

Prerequisites Basic knowledge of mathematics, general mechanics, fluid mechanics and

Course description LECTURE


1. Introduction, essential rules – 1h
2. Convergence and stability of numerical schemes for fluid mechanics equations – 4h
3. Stability of schemes of convection and diffusion. Upwind methods, Lex’s methods –
3h
4. Removal of disadvantages of the so called “numerical viscosity” – 1h
5. Finite volume methods and stability of these schemes – 3h
6. Turbulence modelling for algorithms used – 2h
7. Solvers for unsteady equations of fluid mechanics – 2h
8. Navier-Stokes equations solutions according to pressure correction solvers - 4h

TUTORIALS
1. Presentation of the code – 1h
2. Analysis of numerical simulation results for a simple geometry pipe (lab. nos. 1 and
2) and comparison with analytical and experimental data – 2h
3. Analysis of the mesh size influence on the solution quality on the basis of the results
from lab. no. 3 – 1h
4. Analysis of the simplifying assumptions influence on the solution quality on the
basis of the results from lab. no. 4 – 1h
5. Short introduction to turbomachinery – 2h
