Surface Area and Volume of

Rectangular Prisms

Notes
Finding Surface Area of Prisms

surface area (SA): the total area of the surface of a
three-dimensional object

rectangular prism: SA = 2lw + 2wh + 2lh

cube: SA = 6s2

- your answer should be units squared (in2)
Surface Area:

Surface Area = 2lw + 2wh + 2lh
= 2 (5 x 5) + 2 (5 x 8) + 2 (5 x 8)
= 2 (25) + 2 (40) + 2 (40)
= 50 + 80 + 80
= 210 in2
Finding the Volume of a Prism

volume: the number of cubic units needed to ll
a solid

prism: a solid object with two idenJcal ends and
at sides; rectangular and triangular prisms

volume = Base x Height
= l x w x h

- your answer should be units cubed (P3)
Volume:

Volume = base x height

= Bh
= l x w x h
= 5 x 5 x 8
= 200 in3
PracJce:

Find the surface area and volume of each.

1. A box with a height of 7m, width of 3m, and length
of 5m.

2. A pool with a length of 25 feet, width of 8 feet, and
height of 6 feet.

3. A cereal box with a height of 10 in., width of 2
inches, and length of 5 inches.

4. A square package with a side measuring 8 inches.
