Abstract A zoning scheme of regional autonomy back-up protection was proposed in this paper.
Firstly, the zoning principles including the protection scope of main stations, the treatment method of
boundary components, and the tactics coping with main stations failure were formulated. With these
principles the protection system will possess the following characteristics. The first point is information
need and communication delay are balanced to ensure information completeness and protec tion rapidity.
Another is each component can be protected independently by at least one main station for the purpose
of simplifying protection coordination strategies. The third is that faults are able to be decided
accurately with the decision function failure in any main station so as to enhance the adaptability of the
protection system. Based on those, the zoning methods were presented. The narrow sense adjacency
matrix was defined to select main stations and divide the protection scope of each main stat ion. Then
the paper analyzed the operation logic of regional back-up protection and faults can be cleared reliably
in various conditions. At the last, analysis results of the actual system verified the effectiveness of this
zoning scheme.
