Despite cloudy skies, the welcoming reception hosted by Quail Lodge for
MBPAPA members was hugely successful. About fifty MBPAPA members
attended and enjoyed the hospitality on Saturday, January 24th. After being
welcomed formally by Quail Lodge staff, MBPAPA Board Members outlined our
accomplishments for the past year complete with slide show and introduced Usana Weaver

our plans for this year. The congenial atmosphere lent itself to a new camaraderie
within the membership, and 2009 promises to be better than ever.

MBPAPA PAINT OUTS GLENN DEVIN RANCH PAINT-OUT

SOBRANTES POINT by Rose Sloan
On Sat. Dec. 20, about 10 artists made their way to Glenn
Devin Ranch. It is located at the end of Palo Colorado
Canyon. Driving through the Canyon is a rare experience
in itself. It is a canyon filled with redwoods. Small
wooden cabins are perched here and there along the
steep sides of the Canyon, often with a steep stairway as
their only access. Cars are parked on the road. The
Maria Boisvert
Canyon is dark, at least this time of year, and the cabins
look cold and damp. A big sign, expressing thanks to the
firefighters for protecting their homes during the “Glenn Devin Fire Truck” by Tim Sloan

summer wildfires, stands near one of the homes. The road is single lane, and cars have to pull over to let
another pass. As you approach Glenn Devin Ranch, you climb out of the Juliadark
SeelosCanyon into painting
with her demo the light. The
trees change to eucalyptus and are not as dense.
Jeff Smith opened the gate for the artists and we had to carry our gear up a gravel road for about a quarter

of a mile. Finally we came to a barn and some out-buildings. Nearby a corral held two burros. We followed
the road to a point where you could see the ocean and the surrounding steep hills. It was one of those "on
top of the world" experiences. Even though it was a cold windy day, the artists braved the elements and
painted throughout the afternoon. Thanks Rolf Lygren and Jeff
Smith for setting up these unique "paint-outs".

TIPS FOR SUBMITTING ART FOR JURYING by Christine Croizer

Thanks to everyone who submitted work to the jurying for MBPAPA Signature status, and congratulations to
the new Signature Members. It is always very difficult to judge artwork and especially the work of one's peers.
Karen Garnett
The board members/jurors did feel there were a few ideas that might be of interest to, or helpful to, MBPAPA
painters when they submit work for any juried show or event. These are things that they consider when
Joe Ouye submitting their own work to shows. The last statement (#6) applies specifically to MBPAPA exhibitions.
1. This may seem self-evident, but it cannot be overstated; always submit your BEST and preferably most
recent works. If you don't have your best work at hand it may be better to wait until it becomes available.
2. Be consistent in medium and don't try to be a virtuoso. If you work in various media, decide which one
you want to focus on, or the one in which your best work is done, and submit work in only that medium.
3. Consistency also applies to style. If you paint everything from abstracts to high realism, make a decision
about which style you feel your best work is done in, and only submit work in that style to any juried event.
Paula Lewycky
4. Be consistent in your subject matter. It is generally better to show a jury a narrower range of subjects
than trying to show how well you paint absolutely EVERYTHING.
5. Have a cohesive presentation. The style of framing should be consistent with the style of the work. Use
the best frames you can afford and keep the "look" of your presentation consistent. Always show work in
ready-to-hang condition.
6. For the purposes of MBPAPA, unless the prospectus specifically states otherwise, you will always want to
submit work that is painted "en plein-air" in the Greater Monterey Bay Area.
(A note on still life paintings; unless there is some sense of a still-life being out in the open air, it cannot
be considered a plein-air painting).
