Critical Tensile Strain:

Tensile strains at the bottom of asphalt layer have been used as

design criteria to prevent fatique cracking .

Two types of principle strains:

a) Overall Principle Strain:

Based on all components of stresses.
b) Horizontal Principle Strain:
Based on Horizontal stresses only.

Overall Strain is slightly greater than Horizontal, so it is on the

safe side.
