No Boundaries

Sem Fronteiras

For the past five years, Luis Pereira (aka Stewart Sukuma) and
I have discussed the need for a joint venture between musicians
in the states and Mozambique. I met Mr. Pereira in 1998 at
Berklee College. We quickly became friends and have worked
together ever since. My first visit to Maputo, Mozambique
was in 1999. It was at this time that the idea for "No
Boundaries/Sem Fronteiras" took shape.

During my two trips to Mozambique I had the pleasure of

meeting many of the musicians there. Many of them had
expressed their wish to come to Berklee College of Music to
study, but did not have the financial means to accomplish this
task.

Luis and I discussed frequently about having my quintet tour

Mozambique, give clinics, and promote a musical and cultural
exchange of ideas. We would educate the musicians in
Maputo, on topics like instrumental technique, harmony,
ensemble performance, recording techniques, and any other
topics that the participants would like to learn. In return, we
would learn about Mozambican music, specifically, the different
styles and musical instruments being used in that region of
the world.

When Luis was visiting the States in 2006 and gave a clinic
at Berklee last year in March, we again discussed the possibility
of this project. We applied for the alumni grant, were fortunate
to receive the grant, and are now excited about finally being
able to realize our project in May 2007.

While we're there we'll be giving auditions for Berklee, giving

clinics, and performances, the final program is still being
worked out.

Instrumentation for the quintet is as follows: Vibes Winnie

Dahlgren (Denmark), Piano Joe Mulholland (USA), Bass Winston
Maccow (St. Martin), Drums Kenwood Dennard (USA), and
Percussion Eguie Castrillo (Puerto Rico). Additional personnel
include Vocalist Kudisan Kai (USA), and Recording Engineer
Alexia Rosari (Italy/Switzerland). Joining us in Mozambique
singer/songwriter Luis Pereira (Mozambique).

Winnie Dahlgren

A native of Denmark Winnie Dahlgren started playing percussion

at age fifteen, and received both her bachelors degree in
music education in 1991 and her Masters degree in
Performance in 1995 from the Vestjysk Academy of Music in
Esbjerg, Denmark. In the middle of her classical studies at the
conservatory she took two years off to study jazz at Berklee
College of Music in Boston. In 1996 she returned to Berklee
College of Music from which she received a bachelors degree
in jazz composition and performance in 1997.

Before returning to the United States in 1996 she performed

with Aarhus Symphony Orchestra, Snderjyllands Symphony
orchestra, Aarhus Sinfonietta, Esbjerg Ensemble, Amager
Theatre, Esbjerg Theatre and ventyr Operaen.
Ms. Dahlgren was also a much sought after instructor, teaching
total percussion as well as jazz vibes and drum set.

She has since performed in both jazz and classical settings,

with concerts in Europe, the United States, and Southern
Africa. Since November 1998 she has been working with
singer Stewart Sukuma from Mozambique. She has shared
stage with: Steve Lacy, Christian McBride, and Horacio El
Negro Hernandez to name a few.
Winnie was chosen to represent Denmark on a Europe-tour
with the "European Youth Jazz Orchestra" in July 1999. In 2000
Winnie was once again chosen to represent Denmark in the
The All Star Group of Swinging Europe, performing and
playing her own compositions on the MusicOra Exhibition in
Paris. As a composer she has been commissioned and written
music for many different jazz settings, ranging from small
ensemble to big bands, as well as writing for percussion
ensembles.

Ms. Dahlgren has surrounded herself with musicians from all

over the world which allows her to swiftly move between the
different styles, with styles ranging from classical to jazz, latin
and world music, and still retain their authenticity. Currently,
Winnie Dahlgren is an active percussionist performing in various
settings in addition to being in the faculty at Berklee College
of Music in Boston, as an associate professor since 2001. The
Winnie Dahlgren Quintet was in March 2004 on tour in Denmark
performing concerts and workshops. During this time in
Denmark Winnie also recorded with the British singer Leo
Sayer, for his latest CD.
Eguie Castrillo

Growing up in the Cupey section of San Juan, Puerto Rico,

Castrillo's first showed hints of musical ability playing a
tiny organ in his parents' living room. "I used to play the
theme to the movie The Godfather and 'Noche de Paz'
["Silent Night"] on that organ, and it would make my mother
cry," Castrillo says. He continues with a laugh, "I wonder
now if she was crying because it touched her or because
it sounded bad."

Castrillo's parents ultimately diverted his attention from

the organ when he was seven years old by giving him a
set of timbales for Christmas. "I loved the timbales and
would practice for eight hours most days," Castrillo recalls.
"Timbales are very loud. When I played at night, the
neighbors would call the police. Finally, we all came to an
agreement that I would have to stop playing by 8:00 p.m.
But by the time that happened, I had become good friends
with the police!"

One artist whose music profoundly affected Castrillo

early on was the late, great bandleader and percussionist
Tito Puente. "After I saw him playing timbales, I knew
what I wanted to be a timbalero." At 11, he met Giovanni
Hidalgo, who Castrillo believes is one of the best conga
players anywhere. The connection helped broaden
Castrillo's musical horizons. "I was lucky to grow up around
him," Castrillo says. "After we met, I started playing conga
and bongos and even a little bit of bata drums." These
days, Castrillo is a high demand percussionist and an
authority on the rhythms of the Caribbean countries Cuba,
Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, and Trinidad and Tobago.

Castrillo started playing professionally with several

groups in high school. By the time he left Puerto Rico in
1993, he had played with all of the top names in the
country. "I felt I had to move to see where my talent would
take me," says Castrillo. A group in New York called,
promising me good work as a conguero if I moved there.
I had a family and owned a house in Puerto Rico by then,
so moving to New York was a big change." In the end, the
work never materialized, and Castrillo left New York for
Miami, where he was soon hired by Latin-jazz trumpeter
Arturo Sandoval.

"The five years I spent playing with Arturo were great. We

traveled around the world four times and played with many
great musicians, including Michael Brecker, Steve
Winwood, and Cachao Lopez." Toward the end of that
stint, Castrillo wanted a change. He sought to tour less
and spend more time at home with his family. At the
urging of Professor Victor Mendoza and others, Castrillo
moved to the Boston area and began teaching at Berklee
in 1999.
Kudisan Kai

Kudisan Kai, the artist formerly known as Natalie Jackson, has

made an incredible journey from opera to alternative metal.
"For my parents, classical was the way to go. I became good
at it." When she was 13 years old, Kudisan starred as Madame
Butterfly. "When I went to Howard U., the presiding music
was jazz or r&b/jazz and I wanted to excel in what was popular
in my environment. So I set out to be the best I could in jazz."
The best is exactly what she became. Kudisan graduated
from Howard University in Washington, D.C. and received
additional training at the Tanglewood Summer Music Program
and The Eastman School of Music in Rochester. She went
on to pursue graduate studies in Voice and Arts Administration
at New York University, New York. This classically trained
singer got her commercial music start in jazz on recordings
with the Howard University Jazz Ensemble. As a result of this
exposure, she received Downbeat Magazines Best Jazz
Vocalist Award. She later toured with Anita Baker and Natalie
Cole. Then, she did an about face and toured for six years
with Elton John. Kudisan also worked extensively with Chaka
Khan. "When I toured with Chaka I realized that what we
have in common is the use of dynamics the use of loud and
edgy tones, countered with soft, airy tones. We both use all
areas of our voice, moving from one extreme to the next. In
R&B music, there is a formula, and if you don't do those kinds
of runs or finesse your sound in that manner, people won't
buy it. R&B did not give me the freedom I wanted. Then, I
found that experience in rock music. I found a freedom to
sound whatever way I wanted to sound in this genre." Kudisan
has appeared on Oprah, Rosie ODonnell, and The Today Show.
Her latest appearances were with Beck on tour; MTVs Total
Request Live; and with Sting on The Tonight Show with Jay
Leno. The range of artists with whom Kudisan has recorded
reflects the depth of her experience, and includes Bette Midler,
Diana Ross, Joe Cocker, Saliva, Mary J. Blige, and Powerman
5000. The list of producers include, George Duke, Arif Mardin,
Don Was, Patrick Leonard, and Glen Ballard. This versatile
artist can be heard in a host of television and radio commercials,
as well as movies. She performed on the soundtrack of
Dreamworks El Dorado, Disneys Dinosaurs, Ali, and John
Singletons Dark Blue, working with top-rated music producers
such as James Newton Howard, John Powell and others.
"When I was younger, I had no ability to allow myself to be
really angry or feel anger. I always avoided confrontation. It
really pissed me off that I was such a wimp. I have since
changed all of that." Kudisan was featured with her own
alternative-metal band in CBGBs, Cat Club and the Bitter End,
three of the hottest New York Clubs. On the west coast, she
graced the stage of L.As Viper Room, where she showcased
her songwriting talent as well. "In coming into my own as
a person that deserves to be heard. I have found my voice."
And a powerful one it is.

Alexia Rosai

Alexia Rosari has been active in the music industry for nearly
two decades. At the age of 16, she started singing in local
bands in her hometown of Bern, Switzerland. She has since
explored various musical styles including classical, rock, pop,
blues, and jazz. In 1994, she was cast as an actor and singer
in the European version of the musical Chicago. Her solid
foundation in classical vocal training, extensive performance
experience, and vocal versatility earned her an International
Scholarship to Bostons world-renowned Berklee College of
Music during an audition in Paris in 1995. In the winter of
1996, she moved to Boston to begin her studies at Berklee.
That same year, her first CD single, Save Your Love, climbed
to #3 in the Swiss charts.
Alexias passion for technology and experimenting with audio
recording prompted her to enroll in the Music Production and
Engineering program at Berklee. Soon after, she was awarded
the 1998 Mix Magazine TEC Award for excellence. After
graduating from Berklee, she moved to New York City, where
she engineered and composed music for TV production
companies such as the Childrens Television Workshop
(Sesame Street) and the Jim Henson Company. Returning
to Boston in 2001, Alexia spent five years as the Assistant
Studio Manager of the Berklee recording studios.
During that time she had the privilege of working as a recording
engineer with jazz legends such as Gary Burton, Greg Hopkins,
and Terri Lyne Carrington. She recently accepted a coveted
position as the schools first ever Auditions Coordinator,
responsible for recruiting prospective students worldwide.
Over the years, Alexia has proven herself as an accomplished
professional audio engineer, programmer, composer and
musician. She has discovered that programming electronic
music, in particular, allows her to creatively combine both her
technical skills and musical talents. Her original music has
been featured in independent films such as All The Rage
(1999) and in the documentary Truths and Transformations
(2006), for which she wrote, programmed, produced and
recorded the entire soundtrack. Her remix of Two of Us, an
original pop/rock song written by Los Angeles-based Adriana
Balic (live tour keyboardist for PINK!), was recently nominated
as one of 10 finalists in the Dance/Electronica category of the
2006 U.S.A. Songwriting Competition.
Alexia has an extensive knowledge of the industry-leading
audio and sequencing software Pro Tools (Digidesign) and
Logic Pro (Apple). She is an expert in hard-disk recording,
digital audio, MIDI and sequencing applications. She is
comfortable working in combined hybrid studio environments,
integrating analog audio equipment with Digital Audio
Workstations (DAW). Her strong musical background combined
with her expertise in music technology have made her a
contributing writer for the Computer Music Journal, published
by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Alexia
is a member of AES (Audio Engineering Society) and the Swiss
performing rights and royalty distribution organization SUISA.
