During the film John Deweys background, theories, and philosophies were described.
John Deweys life was centered on how humans learning. He was an advocate for human
learning and education. John Dewey had three central themes to his lifes work: analysis of truth
as a process, faith in democracy, and human learning. Truth of a process was based on the idea
that truth is the by-product of solving problems. John Deweys faith in democracy lied in the idea
that everyone should put themselves in someone elses shoes and to resist self-interest. His
analysis of human learning was based on his method of intelligence. He believed that in order for
someone to learn they have to have an emotional response to a situation, find the problem, form
a hypothesis of the problem, test the hypothesis, and apply what was learned to future problems.
If the person remembers the outcome and changes their response the next time then they truly
learned something new that expands their thought process for future experiences.
The theorist Jean Piaget and John Dewey both had similar theories that a new experience
could change ones thought process in future experiences. Jean Piagets theory, assimilation and
accommodation, believed that new experiences transforms existing structures of thought for
future experiences. John Deweys theory, the method of intelligence, proposed that when a
person has a new experience it draws an emotional response, then we are intrigued to figure out
the problem in the situation, which leads a person to think of, or hypothesize, a solution to this
problem, which then leads them to testing their solution, and finally involves application of the
knowledge gained from this experience in future events. Both theories show that in order for
humans to gain knowledge and to learn from an experience they must apply the data collected
After viewing this film, I will make sure that my lessons and curriculum are relevant to
the time and situation we are in. I will remember that each student is their own person with their
own thoughts, interests, and desires that help them engage in learning. John Dewey believed that
education should always reflect the time and situation the world is in. I plan to make sure my
lessons and teaching evolves so that the students are always getting the best education that can be
provided and not just a cookie cutter curriculum the state gives me. I want to teach my students
to be open to new experiences and to achieve that I must be open to them to, this is where
evolving and adapting to the times and situation comes into play.
