1. INTRODUCTION

1.1. Purpose 1.2. Operation

The airplane condition monitoring system (ACMS) monitors and stores Central to the system is a control box with an ACMS dedicated processor in
airplane system and documentary data for use in trend analysis and to -help in the airplane digital flight data acquisition unit (DFDAU). Internal software for
troubleshooting. data retrieval from specified systems lets the data go to recording devices or a
printer.

A control display unit (CDU) or an ACMS controller can control data retrieval.

An update of the operation software can come through a portable data

loader, an airborne data loader, or the DFDAU.

2. GENERAL DESCRIPTION

2.1. Operation 2.2. Interface

The ACMS processor is in the digital flight data acquisition unit (DFDAU). The These are the types of airplane system inputs:
processor controls all ACMS operation and has interfaces with other devices in
the airplane such as a printer or a data storage device. The processor also has - Analog data
interfaces with the DFDAU mandatory processor on an internal bus. Software - Digital data
controls the processor, and the processor collects data and puts together - Discrete data.
reports to help maintenance or engineering.
The DFDAU gets the analog and discrete inputs and changes them to digital
These are examples of events that cause reports: format. The DFDAU then sends the digital data to the ACMS section on an
internal bus. The control display units (CDUs) give menu and report printout
- Power-up self-test selections.
- Engine overboost
- Stable cruise
- Events as set by the airline.

The airline also sets the quantity and types of data in each report.

You use a data loader to install system operation software and databases into
the DFDAU.

so that it opens outward for access to the drive door.

The drive lets you upload software programs to the 8 processors in the DFDAU
or load ACMS reports to a blank, preformatted optical disk. The kind and
format of the reports depends upon the software in the DFDAU. The airline
chooses the software to use.

The front of the unit contains these features:

The front of the unit contains these features: In addition to the mandatory data recording operation, the DFDAU does the
aircraft condition monitoring system (ACMS) function. The ACMS makes

5. DFDAU FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTION

5.1. General 5.2. Power Requirements

The digital flight data acquisition unit (DFDAU) gets data from digital, analog, The DFDAU gets 115v ac single-phase, unswitched power from the left bus.
and discrete sources. CPU 1 processes the data. It changes the data into
Harvard Bi-phase digital data and sends it to the flight data recorder (FDR). The internal power supply makes all necessary DC voltages. The left bus
supplies 26v do as a syncro reference voltage.
The DFDAU also collects data for use with aircraft condition monitoring system
(ACMS) equipment. This is a non-mandatory function and for trend analysis
and fault troubleshooting. CPU 2 does this function.

These systems and line replaceable units (LRUs) connect with the DFDAU:

management unit (MU)
- Printer
- Control display units (CDUs)
- Multi-purpose interactive display unit (MIDU)
- Airborne data loader (ADL).

5.3. Analog inputs 5.5. Discrete Inputs

The analog interface circuits sample input analog signals and change them to Buffer circuits receive discrete inputs and sample them in sequence. They are
digital data for the flight data controller (CPU 1). The converted data goes to then conditioned and sent to CPU 1 and CPU 2.
CPU 2 through the crosstalk buses.

5.4. Digital Inputs 5.6. BITE Interface

ARINC 429 receivers get digital inputs. A parity check is done on all inputs. The DFDAU CAUTION lamp turns on for a digital input fault or a CPU 2
The signals are then multiplexed before they go to CPU 1 and CPU 2. EPROM failure.

The BITE circuit sends an alpha/numeric code to the digital fault display
readout. When this lamp turns on, flight data recording continues, but ACMS
functions do not operate.
