Congress 1994
May I take this opportunity to share with all of you who participate in this year's Religious
Education Congress my prayers and best wishes for a successful Congress.
The theme selected for Congress weekend, LIVE THE PROMISE, speaks of God's
covenanted love --a gift freely given to our human family. This promise of Covenant is
the foundation and source of our hope. God is our God, and we are a people called to
enter into this special relationship by heeding the words of Jesus: "This is the time of
fulfillment. The reign of God is at hand! Reform your lives and believe in the good
news!" (Mk 1:15)
To LIVE THE PROMISE calls us to ongoing conversion and response to God's saving
presence among us. Because of God's unconditional promise of love and faithfulness, we
can live with a spirit of trust even in the midst of the inevitable struggles and ambiguities
of daily life.
I am confident that Congress 1994 will be a wonderful opportunity for all of you to come
together and be enriched by the many workshops, Liturgical celebrations, and community
gatherings. It is in and through our community that we grow in the challenge of Christ's
words and actions.
Please be assured of my support and encouragement as you continue to pass on the good
news of God's promise of love and faithfulness, and as you encourage our young Catholic
generation to hear and follow the voice of Christ.
Asking the Lord's blessings upon you and all your efforts in religious education and
ministry, I am
..

AGAPE
Marty Haugen
Marty Haugen is no stranger to the Los Angeles Congress! The performance of his "Tales
of Wonder" was one of the highlights of the 1990 Congress and this year's performance of
his most recent work, Agape, promises to be just as exciting. Agape is a theater piece which
follows the basic structure of the Mass and includes the song, dance, and writings of many
cultures. You simply cannot miss this West Coast premiere ofanother Haugen masterpiece!
