Elastic Bracing Screw for Staybolt

Dear Sirs,

It is important that the staybolt is tightened according to

the instruction book or the modified tightening according to enclosed
list No. 223803, which was sent out with our Sl68-S/\D, and that
the bracing screws for the staybolt are correctly tightened.

The bracing screws should be regularly inspected because

they ore exposed to wear on the end surfaces owing to the inevitable
mutual movements in vertical direction between staybolt and A-frames
caused by ignition in the cylinder. If the bracing screws are not
correctly tightened there is a risk that the staybolt begins to oscillate
transversely if the natural transversal frequency of the staybolt is in
resonance with some excitations from the engine or the ship. These
oscillations may result in fractures in the staybolt.

To avoid wear of the bracing screws we have mode 0 new

type of bracing screw which is so elastic that the screws are able to
follow the vertical movements of the staybolt. We enclose drawing
No. 422276-4 for your guidance.

like the earlier design of bracing screw it is necessary to

loosen the new type if the staybal t nuts ore to be entirely loosened
and only tighten the bracing screws when the staybolt nuts are again
correctly tightened. Normal re-tightening of the staybol t nuts con,
however, be done with normally tightened bracing screws.

On inspection the old type of bracing screws (see enclosed

drawing No. 1332032 and translation of text 23/3-66) can be known
'-'~.", ''I' .

from the new type by an external thread in the whole length whereas
the new type finishes with a cylindric pie,-e with a length of 6 mm.

The new type of broc i ng screw has been used for about
2 years. If you ore interested in these bracing screws we should
like to make on offer for delivery.

When mounting the new bracing screws the stay bolt

should be turned 1800 because of possible wear marks from the
existing bracing screws.

Yours faithfully,
AKTIESELSKABET

Supplement to instruction for tightening of stay bolts

Bracing screws for stay bolts

The purpose of the bracing screws is to prevent

the stay holts from vibrating, which may cause overload
and breakage to occur.
After tightening the stay bolts, the bracing
screws are screwed up as follows:
All screws are screwed up until they touch
the stay bolt. Screws and. threaded holes
are made with normal tolerances, making it
possible clearly to feel when the screw is
in contact with the stay bolt.
All screws are tightened; however, it must
not be pos~ible to turn any of the screws
essentially; otherwise the tightening of
the bracing screws is repeated from item 1.
If necessary. the screw in question must
be made to run more easily.
Lock nuts are tightened .
. On mo~rrting and dismantling of the stay
bolts the lotk nuts are loosene~, and the bracing
screws so much unscrewed as to make the turned-down
groove in th~ t~read visible outside the lock nuts.
