Stewardship Revision Sheet p.

45-65 (20 pages)

1. Stewardship: Looking after the environment for people in the future.
2. Green House Gases: CO2, Methane, Nitrogen Oxide (come from farming & burning FF)
3. Green House Effect & Global Warming:
We burn fossil fuels (FF) (oil & coal)
This releases greenhouse gases into the atmosphere (e.g. CO2).
These gases trap heat & dont allow it to escape, the greenhouse effect.
This makes the earth get warmer, global warming.
4. Effects of Global Warming:
Melting Polar icecaps=rising sea levels
More bad storms
More Drought (long spells of no rain)>bad for plants, crops & animals>starvation
More pests (rats, bugs) +diseases>bad for ppl & animals
Extinction (death) of plants + animals
Poverty (poorness)
5. Alternative Energy Sources (what we could use instead of fossil fuels:
Hydroelectric Energy (water from waves & dams)
Solar Energy (Solar panels change sun light to electricity)
Wind Power (wind turn big wind mills making electricity / 7% of Irelands
Nuclear Power (dangerous because of radiation e.g. 1986 Chernobyl
6. Kyoto Protocol: Agreed in Dec 1997;In Kyoto, Japan; Is an international agreement
between countries to reduce their greenhouse gases; Ratified (agrees & by law has to do
it): in Ireland in 2002; By using less fossil fuels, dif sources of energy & Plant trees
7. Copenhagen Earth Summit: Meeting in Dec 2009; In Copenhagen, Denmark; Leaders
knew that global warming was a problem & wanted to keep temperature increases under
2oC;Bad not all countries agreed & had no legal targets to reduce carbon emissions
8. Earth Hour: 1hr last Sat in March every year ppl turn of power to raise awareness
about the amount of power we use; Organised by World Wildlife Fund (WWF); 1st done
in Sydney in 2007 with 2.2 mil ppl; Ireland 2009 saved 30 tonnes of CO 2.
9. Carbon Footprint: Amount of CO2 released into the atmosphere by us
10. 3 Rs: Reduce e.g. packaging; Reuse e.g. rainwater; Recycle e.g. paper
11. Green Schools: An Taisce; environmentally friendly schools; saved the gov 2mil
12. Power of One: An energy saving campaign started by the Irish Government to teach ppl
to save energy & to reduce the amount of co2 being released
13. Animal species endangered of extinction: e.g. Only 2,000 giant pandas left, they eat
bamboos. Humans have deforested (cut down) their main home for farming, the bamboo
forests in Central China & now they are starving to death.
14. Conservation Organisations: work to save the environment & endangered species from
extinction e.g. WWF>mind the environment & animals & Greenpeace>Stop climate change,
ocean pollution, protect natural habitats & end nuclear power.
15. How we can help & how the Government have helped the environment
