HORIZONTAL SUBGRADE REACTION FOR PILE ANALYSIS

Notes: 1. Constant of horizontal subgrade reaction taken to be nh = 350 kN/m3.

(For soft normally-consolidated clays: 350 to 700 kN/m [Tomlinson])
3

2. Pile spacing reduction factor, R = 0.15(S/D) - 0.2 (Refer to Geo Publication No. 1/2006 Table 7.2)
Where S = Pile Spacing
D = Pile Diameter

3. Spring stiffness starts from 3 m below the top level of soil.

4. Horizontal spring stiffness of soil to be used in computer analysis.

Design horizontal spring stiffness of soil K (kN/m) = ( nh * z ) * z * R
where nh = Constant of horizontal subgrade reaction (kN/m3)
z = Depth of soil from seabed level (m).
R = Reduction Factor for Coefficient of Subgrade Reaction for a Laterally Loaded Pile Group
z = Length of beam served by spring (m).
