Power transmission meets art?
I
celand has been toying with - but has ultimately rejected - the prospect
of dozens of 150ft-high figures constructed from steel, glass and concrete
erected across the island's volcanic landscape.
Each humanoid electricity pylon can be posed into a different posture, allowing the structures to
reflect different environments. Choi + Shine, the US architecture practice behind the proposal, calls
the humanoid towers "powerful, solemn and variable", and claims it represents a modern take on the
ancient Easter Island statues. Despite their striking appearance, costs would still be kept low as the
figures would require only minor alterations to standard pylon designs.
The architectural company states: "These iconic pylon-figures will become monuments in the land-
scape. Seeing the pylon-figures will become an unforgettable experience, elevating the towers to
something more than merely a functional design of necessity."
The judging committee of the High-Voltage Pylon Competition, which was
established to find an innovative design for Iceland's new pylon network,
gave the proposals an honourable mention.
Although Landsnet, the company responsible for managing the Iceland's
electricity network, decided not to push ahead with the plans, its
originality has been honoured by the influential Boston Society of
Architects. 'Land of Giants' was one of four winners of the 2010 BSA
annual Unbuilt Architecture Award, which recognises the boldness of
unrealised projects.
While the human pylons not be to everybody's taste, they point towards
more aesthetically-pleasing alternatives to the imposing towers that
currently dominate the countryside worldwide.
The architecture firm said: "Making only minor alterations to well established steel-framed tower
design, we have created a series of towers that are powerful, solemn and variable. These iconic pylon-
figures will become monuments in the landscape. Seeing the pylon-figures will become an
unforgettable experience, elevating the
towers to something more than merely a
functional design of necessity."
The figures can be placed into different
poses, with the suggestion that the
landscapes could enhance the position
that the sculpture is placed into. For
example, as a power line ascends a hill,
the pylons could look as if they're
climbing.
It is to be hoped that more energy
companies may see this concept as a
means to turn often ugly and functional
transmission equipment into a thing of
beauty.

Saudi Electric's Al-Qurayah to use gas
As fuel for its planned 1800 MW Al-
Qurayah power plant, the state-
controlled Saudi Electricity Co (SEC)
will use 300m cubic feet per day
(cfd) of gas instead of fuel oil to
drive its turbines. The plant had
been projected to use heavy fuel oil
as a feedstock. Gas, the more eco-
friendly option, means the plant can
be fully on line in 2014, slightly
earlier than for an oil fired plant,

Emerson awarded $US28m Ukraine contract for turbines

EUkrHydroEnergo, the main hydroelectric
generating company of Ukraine, has Belchatow in Poland - a model for
awarded Emerson Process Management, an Emersons projects in Eastern Europe.

for automation systems to manage and
control 100 turbine generators in nine
hydroelectric power plants.
The contract is part of UkrHydroEnergo's
Hydropower Rehabilitation Project to
upgrade and modernise the series of eight
plants that were built between 1939 and
1975 and make up the Dnieper River energy
cascade. The project also includes the
Dnestrovskaya hydroelectric power plant
that was built in 1983 on the Dniester River
watershed.
Funding is being provided by a loan from the
World Bank to the government of Ukraine.
With a total capacity of 4639MW, the nine
plants currently provide over 90% of
Ukraine's hydroelectric generating capacity.

New power ratings for lineup of

Interim Tier 4 diesel engines
John Deere Power Systems (JDPS) has announced the generator drive power ratings for its entire
lineup of Interim Tier 4 diesel engines. The new power ratings are the latest addition to a lineup
of standby and prime gen-set engines which meet emissions regulations around the world.

ost people in the industry will
know that for prime power
applications, Interim Tier 4
emissions regulations begin on January
1st, 2011 for 130 kW (174 hp) and above
engines and require a 90% reduction in
diesel particulate matter (PM) and a 50%
reduction in nitrogen oxide (NOx) from
previous Tier 3 requirements.
The new, more stringent emissions
regulations represent both a challenge
and, at the same time, an opportunity for
the industry to contribute to protecting
our environment.

Magellan to build new combined

cycle plant for Ghana by 2012
A combined cycle plant will be built by Magellan Aerospace in Takoradi, Ghana, by 2012.
This will provide 132 MW of electric power and will generate revenues of US$185m, says the
company. WIP looks at the elements of the project and the consortium behind it.

revealing that the energy payback of HEPA filters can be measured in days.

APG1000 generator set which has been designed to maximize total efficiency by up to 89.4% in
CHP applications. WIP has the story.
