1 Help for type SBO..-M - version 1.0

1.1 Overview of device-specific help
The FCT with the PlugIn "SBO..-M network" has already been prepared for future firmware versions of the
Compact Vision System. The scope of functions of Compact Vision Systems with different firmware states
may differ. The necessary firmware-specific dialogues and helps for the FCT are saved in the Compact
Vision System. When you first insert a Compact Vision System into a camera network of the FCT on your
PC, this information will be transmitted from the device to the PC. The firmware-specific scope of functions
and the help information for the relevant version is then also available in the FCT.
If you wish to look at and modify properties of the Compact Vision System, the loaded dialogues and helps
within the FCT then appear. The Compact Vision System type SBO..-M with firmware version 1.0 offers
the following device-specific functions and dialogues:
"Video" register and "Device information" in the register "Camera name"
"Video" field in the register "Camera name"
"Player" field in the register "Recording name" (date, time)
"Record symbol" field in the register "Record control"
Dialogue "Change name of the device"
Dialogue "Ascertaining maximum record duration".

1.2 "Video" register and "Device information" in the register "Camera

name"
With the parameters in the "Video" register you can modify the settings for the video recording. As an
example you can set up the device optimally to the scene to be recorded and undertake the settings
required for the relevant light situations. If the device is connected, the entries will be accepted
immediately and transmitted to the device. If the device is disconnected, modifications will be effective only
within the FCT and will be saved when the project is saved. Settings will not be transmitted to the device
until the next connection is made again.
The settings modified with a list field or a slider will be transferred directly to the device. Modified values in
entry fields will be transmitted if the cursor moves into another entry field or if a list field or slider is marked
(the entry field loses the focus).

Please note
The settings in this register cannot be modified during a recording. During this time no live data
are transmitted to the PC for direct display.

You can find the "Video" register and "Device information" in the register "Camera name."

Name (IP address/MAC-ID)

The dialogue, information and images represented here originate from the Compact Vision System named
here. "Name" stands for the device name. "IP address" shows the IP address and "MAC-ID" the Ethernet
address of the device.
Frame rate
Determines the number of images which are to be made in the time unit specified. You can set the frame
rate with the aid of the first slider or enter a value in the entry field. The adjacent list field specifies the time
unit.
Example: With PAL e.g. 25 images per second are represented.
The frame rate and image height cannot be set completely independently of each other. As from a certain
frame rate the images can no longer be shown in their full height. If you increase the frame rate with the
relevant slider, the image height will automatically be reduced as from a certain limit value. The higher the
desired frame rate, the smaller the maximum possible image height.
The frame rate also depends on the exposure time. The exposure time can be maximum approx. 1/frame
rate.

Caution
The starting time and the duration of a recorded video can be shifted in respect of the time of
the trigger signal
by up to +/- 0,5 x 1/framerate.

Image quality
Determines how good the quality should be or how much the recorded images should be compressed.
Higher quality means less compression and thereby shorter recording duration.
Record control
Determines how the signal is to be used with a "controlled recording":

Mode Description

Start recording at signal The recording is started when the signal is applied, taking into account
the fixed time shift.
Stop recording at signal The recording is stopped when the signal is applied, taking into account
the fixed time shift.
One image One image is saved. The fixed time shift is also taken into account here.

Ascertaining maximum record duration

Opens the dialogue "Ascertaining maximum record duration". You can therefore ascertain the probable
maximum possible recording duration (maximum value of the parameters "Duration" and "Time shift before
signal"). Ascertainment is necessary when parameters, which influence the recording duration or memory
space requirements of the images, are modified. If ascertainment is necessary, this will be shown in the
register "Video" before the entry "Maximum values" with the symbol
During ascertainment, the device takes into account the set parameters and records images. From these
images, the device ascertains the image which occupies the largest memory location. The probable
maximum possible record duration and the maximum possible time shift for the current frame rate are
calculated from this. In order to achieve realistic results, you should show the same scene during
ascertainment as that which you wish to record later.
Next to the button "Ascertaining ... " the probable record duration for the scene shown is displayed. If the
ascertained maximum values for the parameters "Duration" and "Time shift before signal" are exceeded,
this will be shown before the relevant parameter by the symbol .
Record duration
Determines the record duration. With the setting "Maximum length" the record duration is limited only by
the memory capacity of the camera. With the setting "Defined duration" you can specify the duration in the
entry field below.

3
Festo Configuration Tool - Help for type SBO..-M version 1.0

Duration
Only available if "Defined duration" has been selected as record duration.
Specifies how long the recording is to be. As the maximum possible length cannot be ascertained exactly
in advance, values can be entered up to 150% above the maximum value which can be defined with the
command "Ascertaining... ." If the maximum ascertained value is exceeded, this will be shown by the
symbol .

Caution
If this parameter exceeds the actual maximum record duration, this may lead to incomplete
unusuable recordings.
Ascertain the probable maximum record duration. If possible, drop below the ascertained
maximum value.
Make sure that the recording conditions (e.g. lighting) do not change, in order that the
ascertained record duration can actually be achieved.

Time shift
Defines when the recording is to be started or stopped with regard to the signal.
Time shift before/after signal
Defines whether the time shift between the trigger signal and the start of recording is to take place before
or after the signal. If the maximum ascertained value is exceeded with the setting "Time shift before
signal," this will be shown by the symbol .

Caution
If the parameter "Time shift before signal" exceeds the actual maximum record duration, this
may lead to incomplete unusuable recordings. If the value is excessively exceeded, this could
lead to completely empty recordings.
Ascertain the probable maximum record duration. If possible, drop below the ascertained
maximum value.
Make sure that the recording conditions (e.g. lighting) do not change, in order that the
ascertained record duration can actually be achieved.

Multi record
Defines whether the device should allow further recordings after a recording.

Mode Description

No The device reacts to a trigger signal with a single recording. Further recordings must
be started with the PlugIn "SBO..-M network" via the record control.
Yes, abort if The device reacts to consecutive trigger signals with a recording. The number of
memory is recordings is limited to the number of recordings which can be saved in the camera
full. memory. Further recordings must be started with the PlugIn "SBO..-M network" via
the record control. All part recordings are grouped together to a complete recording in
the PlugIn "SBO..-M network."
Yes, A recording already in the memory will be overwritten if there is a trigger signal. The
overwrite memory will continue to be written until the recording is concluded with the command
recordings "Abort" in the register "Record control." The last actuated recording is in the memory.

Brightness control
Exposure time and gain
These parameters enable the brightness of the camera to be controlled within the ranges represented.
The gain influences the light sensitivity of the sensor. The light sensitivity is increased if the gain is
increased. Excessive gain can lead to faults in the image.
The exposure time is the time during which the sensor is subjected to light for each image. The longer
the exposure time, the brighter the recorded image will be. The exposure time must be adapted to the
movement speed, the light available and the light sensitivity of the sensor. With fast moving objects a
short exposure time must be selected in order to avoid blurred images.
Internal lighting
Only type SBOI-M: Switches the internal lighting of the Compact Vision System SBOI-M on or off.
Automatic image size and position
Specifies whether the image section is to be selected manually or automatically. Entry fields for manual
entry will be masked in or out accordingly. Automatic image size and position means that the following
image section will be recorded:
Section of image source - position X=0 (horizontal) and Y=0 (vertical)
maximum width and maximum height. The maximum height depends on the set frame rate.
Fig.: Image source position X=0 and Y=0

Width, height, position X and position Y

Only available if "Automatic image size and position" is deactivated.
Defines the image section which is to be recorded (specification in pixel). Under width and height you can
define the number of pixels of the desired section. Under position X (horizontal) and Y (vertical) you can
define the top left corner of the section (image source). The maximum possible image height depends on
the current frame rate.
You can shift the image source, image height and image width in the directions X and Y. Step size:
Image height and image width: 8 pixels
Example:
Width 120, height 120 (section of 120 pixels x 120 pixels)
Position X=120, y=120 (top left corner of the section)
The smaller the image section, the more images can be stored in memory. The length of the recording
depends on the required memory per image and the frame rate.
Register "Device information"
This register shows diverse information about the device, e.g. device names, MAC-ID, firmware version
etc.

1.3 "Player" field in the register "Recording name" (date, time)

This area is under the position control and shows the recorded video image and its status as well as the
states of the variables.
You can find the "Player" field in the register "Recording name" (date, time). The PlugIn "SBO..-M network"
automatically enters as recording name the date and the time at the moment when the recording is
downloaded.
Fig.: Field "Image" in the register "Recording name" (example)

Name (IP address/MAC-ID)

The information and images represented here originate from the Compact Vision System named here.
"Name" stands for the device name. "IP address" shows the IP address and "MAC-ID" the Ethernet
address of the device.
Display
The video image can be turned and mirrored with the commands in the field "Display." If the device
records a scene via a mirror, you can adapt the representation of the video with these commands.
Image
This is a recording of the Compact Vision System. The time of the recording is shown by the image time in
the column "Status." The time at the position mark in the time bar shows the time at which the displayed
image was still valid for the recording. If several cameras with different frame rates are used, images from
cameras with higher frame rates change more frequently than those from cameras with lower frame rates.
There are no recording data outside the relevant recording time of a device. A image is not therefore
shown for this device.
You can save an individual image as a JPG file as follows:
1. Place the cursor on the image and press the right-hand mouse button.
The command [Save image] will then appear on the mouse pointer.
2. Select the command [Save image].
The dialogue "Save as" will then appear.
3. Select the directory path and enter a file name.
4. Select the command "Save."
The image will then be saved in the directory specified.
State
Shows status information on the image represented.
Variables
Shows the variable values of the device which were valid at the time of the recording of the image
represented. If a time is specified with the time bar, those images and variables will be displayed which
were valid for the recording at that time. The images and variables were therefore recorded before or at
this time. images and variables within the recording are therefore valid for a certain period of time,
depending on the frame rate used. There are no recording data outside the relevant recording time of a
device. No variables are therefore shown for this device. With devices which do not support any variables,
the fields remain empty.

7
Festo Configuration Tool - Help for type SBO..-M version 1.0

1.4 "Video" field in the register "Camera name"

Displays the data of the Compact Vision System. The designation "(live)" indicates current online
transmitted live data. The designation "(device disconnected)" means that the device is offline. In this case
the data which was last transmitted to the PC and saved will be shown. The saved live image reflects the
current image settings of the device. You can therefore adapt the device optimally to the scene to be
recorded and undertake the settings required for the relevant light situations. When the device is online,
the modified image settings will be visible immediately.

Caution
As live data are transmitted via the Ethernet network, the transmission speed will be subjected
to external influences. If the band width is limited e.g. by other users, transmission may
become jerky. If the PC and the camera are a great distance apart, live data will be displayed
with a time delay.

Please note
During recording no live data are transmitted to the PC.

You can find the field "Video" in the register "Camera name." "Name" stands for the name of the relevant
device.
Fig.: Field "Video" in the register "Camera name" (example)

8
Festo Configuration Tool - Help for type SBO..-M version 1.0

Name (IP address/MAC-ID)

The information and images represented here originate from the Compact Vision System. "Name" stands
for the device name. "IP address" shows the IP address and "MAC-ID" the Ethernet address of the device.
Video of camera name
Shows whether image is live or offline (last live image, as device was disconnected). The name of the
camera will be shown.
Display
The image can be turned and reflected with the commands in the field "Display." If the device is mounted
e.g. twisted or if it records a scene protected by a mirror, you can adapt the representation with these
commands.
The parameters "Width," "Height," "Position X" and "Position Y" in the "Video" register still refer to the
original representation.
Histogram
You can mask in/out the histogram with the button "Histogram."
Representation of the histogram
The histogram shows the brightness distribution of the image represented. The possible brightness values
from black (0) to white (255) are marked on the horizontal axis. The number of pixels in per cent are
marked on the vertical axis. The scaling of this axis can be set in the drop down list to the right above the
histogram (e.g. to "logarithmic to 100%"). The left-hand side of the histogram shows the amount of darker
pixels. The centre range shows the amount of pixels in the medium brightness range. The right-hand side
of the histogram shows the amount of lighter pixels.
With the histogram you can analyse whether the current scene is to be exposed optimally or whether there
is room for improvements (correction of the aperture, exposure time, gain, lighting etc.). If the pixels are
distributed only over a narrow range of brightness, the image will be poor in contrast. If the pixels are
distributed over the entire range of brightness, the complete range of contrast which can be registered by
the sensor will be used.
The histogram can also be used in combination with a picture of a Siemens star recorded by the camera,
in order to judge the focus setting. If the focus is set optimally, there will be two marked peaks in the
histogram. The more marked these peaks are, the better the focus is set.
Image
Shows the current live image or the last live image (device disconnected or recording active) of the
camera.

Please note
During recording no live data are trasmitted to the PC for direct display.
When the project is saved, the last live image will also be saved.

You can save the image shown as a JPG file as follows:

Variables
Shows the variable values of the device which were valid at the time of the recording of the image
represented (e.g. states of digital inputs).

3 Glossary

D
Device manager: With the device manager you can modify system-close properties of unassigned
devices (devices whch are offline).
DHCP: Dynamic protocol for automatic assignment of IP addresses (Dynamic Host Configuration
Protocol)

E
Exposure time: The exposure time is the time during which the sensor is subjected to light during
recording. The longer the exposure time, the more light will penetrate. The choice of exposure
time depends e.g. on the movement speed, the light available and the light sensitivity of the
sensor (see also gain). With moving objects excessive exposure times result in blurred pictures.

F
Frame rate: Determines the number of images which are to be made in the time unit specified. With
PAL this is e.g. 25 pictures per second.

G
Gain: The gain influences the light sensitivity of the sensor. The light sensitivity is increased if the gain
is increased. Excessive gain can lead to picture damage.

I
Image quality: Determines how good the quality should be or how much the recorded images should
be compressed. Higher quality means less compression and thereby shorter record duration.
IP address: With an IP address, a network as well as an individual station in the network can be
addressed. For this the IP address contains the Network ID (specifies the address of a network)
and the host-ID (specifies the address of an individual station in this network).

M
MAC-ID: Fixed assigned address clearly marked for Ethernet device (Media Access Control)

N
Network mask: The Network mask for IP addresses defines with "0" as a position marker, the bytes
which are used for addressing the station (host ID)

T
Time delay: Defines when the recording is to be started or stopped with regard to the signal.
