Strong relationship helps Eldon brothers stay sharp

In any situation it is always
nice when someone has your
back.
Eldon senior Jasey Brandt
and his sophomore brother
Dawson have been looking
out for each other since day
one and it has kept the two
brothers astute on and off
the football field.
Having him on the field
helps me be calm just know-
ing that he is going to be
there for me and having your
own blood play with you gives
you a pretty special connec-
tion, Dawson remarked.
Normally when we go home
we will study plays together so
you always have a partner to
study with and to help you get
better so it feels pretty good.
Although the two play dif-
ferent positions with Jasey be-
ing an offensive and defensive
lineman and Dawson playing
defensive back, they still take
the time to make sure each
know what the other needs to
be doing in order to be suc-
cessful.
He is always going to be
there for motivation, Dawson
noted. We study together so
if Im not fully understanding
something at my position
even though he is a lineman
and I am a safety on defense,
he still helps me understand
what I am supposed to be do-
ing with everything on de-
fense so it is pretty good to
have him there for me.
Those habits may have
come from their father

graduate who also lined up on
the gridiron for the Mus-
tangs. Jasey said it is ex-

the Friday night lights.
My dad has a bunch of sto-
ries for us all the time going
back to his glory days, Jasey
recalled. He tells us how it
was and what we need to do
to be successful like having
good character, paying close
attention to the small details,
focusing on everything coach-
es are telling you and putting
a lot of effort into everything
you do. He is always there to
support us and push us
through because he has al-
ready been through it and
knows what it is like.
Being Brandts, it is im-
portant to the two brothers to
also achieve some of their
dads accomplishments. Ac-
cording to Jasey, Michael
made All-Conference and
All-District before a neck
fracture cut his football career
short his senior year. When
Jasey achieved the feat last
year, it was a moment he will
not soon forget.
He was really proud of
me and was glad I got to ex-
perience how it felt. It was an

that we had, the senior said.
Now, it is up to Dawson to
reach that goal and the soph-
omore may soon get it done
already having a year of var-
sity experience under his belt.
Starting on defense as a
freshman last year was kind
of nerve-wracking. It is a dif-
ferent speed and the kids are
bigger and faster so you dont
really know what to expect,
he noted. Coming into this
season as a sophomore, it is a
big goal I have and my dad
has helped talk me through it
and what the expectations
are to accomplish that goal. I
absolutely have to get it done
now that my brother has
done it.
Jasey and Dawson are just
one pair of brothers on the
team along with Eldon junior
running back and linebacker
Trenton Dillon and fresh-
man offensive and defensive
lineman Kaden Dillon. Al-
though they may look out
for each other, they also em-
phasized how important it
was to look out for their oth-
er teammates as well.

Pair of Versailles football players
looking to carry on family legacies

When any player enters
the world of high school foot-
ball it may be difficult to
know what to expect.
Whether it is the daily
grind of practice or the ac-
tion-packed theatre beneath
the Friday night lights, it may
take some time for any play-
er to get used to but it does
not hurt having older broth-
ers around to show you the
ropes.
This is the case for Ver-
sailles junior wide receiver
and defensive back Quinton
Ryerson who had two older
brothers in Daniel and Raine
come through the program
and freshman tight end and
defensive back Lucas Allen
who used to watch his older
brother Michael suit up for
the Tigers on Friday nights.
Both say their older brothers
helped shape the players they
are today and for that they
will always be grateful.
I can remember my fresh-
man year when my brother
Raine was a senior and he
was always looking out for
me, Ryerson recalled. I was
the new freshman and he
made sure none of the seniors
would pick on me or anything
like that. He taught me how
to work hard, how to go 100
percent on everything I do
and I would not be starting
on varsity right now if it was
not for him or my oldest
brother who taught him.

Allen graduated in 2015, he
still remembers how intense
it was to train with him and
hopes he can live up to the
success his brother had.
When Michael and I
would lift together every once
in a while he would push me
really hard and make me do
all his workouts, Allen stat-
ed. He showed me a lot of
stuff from his college coach
that taught him some stuff
because him and I play the
same position of tight end. It
was always sort of hard trying
to fill those shoes, but I think
I will make it sooner or later.
Ryerson has a similar out-
look to the final two years of
his career as well. The junior
wears the number 13 just as
his two older brothers did
and it has become an identi-
ty. Anytime someone sees
those two black and gold
numbers paired together,
there is a good chance there
is a Ryerson on the field.
We have this legacy of
sharing the jersey number
13 and it just makes our par-
ents so proud to see us on the
field with that number, Ry-

erson said. Our oldest broth-
er had a favorite player that
wore the number, but to me
it has become a symbol of our
family and our legacy here at
Versailles.
As with any family, a sibling
rivalry can exist and there is
nothing like owning the fam-
ily bragging rights. That ri-
valry certainly exists in the
Allen and Ryerson families
and that competitiveness has
helped make each player that
much stronger.
Michael and I would al-
ways just have competitions
no matter what. Ive usually
been faster than him so he
will probably get mad, Allen
said laughingly. But we have
always been competing to
see who is stronger, who
could catch better and stuff
like that.
Quinton undoubtedly
would like to be known as the
best Ryerson on the football
field as well, but he knows
that it is easier said than
done.

Raine and Daniel are a little
bit more athletic than me
and they set the bar really

Osage eager to stay perfect against Warsaw

Osage took care of busi-
ness from the start.
The Indians made a road
trip to Hallsville to open up
Tri-County Conference play
Friday night looking to
keep their undefeated mark
unscathed and they did ex-
actly that as they built up a
40-0 lead and cruised to a
40-20 win on the gridiron.
Osage quickly went to
work and put their first
points on the board a little
over two minutes into the
game as junior quarter-
back Zach Wheeler hit sen-
ior receiver Jason Edwards
for a four-yard touchdown
pass. It would be the first of
three occasions the two
hooked up for touchdowns
on the night as the Indians
built their lead to 19-0 on
throws to Edwards for 12
yards and 63 yards respec-
tively. The Indians soon
made it 26-0 just before
halftime after an intercep-
tion from senior Max
Maples led to fellow senior
Dylan Rileys two-yard
touchdown run.
In the second half it was
the Osage defensive unit
once again who stepped
up and helped lead the of-
fense to some easy scores.
The Indians capitalized af-
ter an interception from
Edwards led to sophomore
receiver Dalton Depees 27-
yard touchdown catch and
an interception from junior
defensive back Ian Riley
set up Dylans second
touchdown on a 5-yard run
to make it 40-0.
Wheeler finished his
night passing for 184 yards
and four touchdowns while
Edwards hauled in four
catches for 101 of those
yards. Junior running back
Nick Riley led the rushing
attack that racked up 144
yards on the ground as he
sprinted for 43 yards while
Dylan added 29 and soph-
omore Hunter Neiman put
up 28 yards respectively.
Hallsville did not go
down quietly as the host
team answered with a 35-
yard touchdown pass and
two touchdown runs of 29
and 54 yards, but the clock
soon hit zero and Osage
moved to 3-0 on the year.
The Indians may soon
become a state-ranked
team as they received votes
in the statewide poll before
week threes round of
games and they will look to
keep the train rolling and
keep their winning streak
intact as they host an 0-3
Warsaw team coming off a
33-7 loss to California in
week 3.

Osage senior Dylan Riley
and juniors Nick and Ian
Riley are cousins who have
been playing the game of
football since they could pick
up a pigskin and as a Riley,
there is nothing worse in the
world than being bested by
either of your cousins. That
rivalry has transitioned to
the gridiron and whether it is
practice or game day, the trio
are constantly striving to
make each other stronger
football players.
Competition wise it is
harder losing to your family
than anybody so I think we
push each other more than
we push anybody else on the
team and it makes us better,
Nick noted.
His cousin Ian agreed.
You definitely dont want
to be the Riley that sucked,
the junior said laughingly.
Sometimes at practice we
just make each other mad to
get that extra little bit out of
the other person.
Although they are fueled
by competitiveness, they are
also fueled with the desire to
look out for each other on the
football field as well.
It is really cool being able
to play with your family, Dy-
lan noted. Another big thing
that comes along with that is
you know you are not only
protecting a teammate, but
your brothers. If you have re-
ally close family ties you know
you are going to do every-
thing you can to protect and
fight as hard as you can for

them. It makes you push
yourself harder than any-
thing else would and that
makes you perform at your
best.
Then there is also the de-
sire to live up to the success
of another Riley who played
before them. Dylans older
brother Austin quarter-
backed the Indians to a dis-
trict title his senior season in
2014 and before most games,
the Osage graduate can be
seen giving pep talks and
support to his younger broth-
er along with their father so
history may be able to repeat
itself.
It was really cool watching
my brother play before me
while I was on the sidelines
and seeing his team succeed.

I can to try to follow in his
footsteps, Dylan remarked.

It was no secret what
Lebanon was going to do
with the ball in a Highway 5
battle of undefeated teams at
Camdenton Friday night.
The Yellowjackets at-
tempted just two passes
grinding out runs and the
clock play after play. Unfor-
tunately for the Lakers, they
were unable to stop enough of
those runs in a 28-19 defeat in
the home opener at Bob
Shore Stadium.
I did not think we played
a bad ballgame, but our in-
ability to stop the run hurt us
because we could not get our
hands on the ball, Camden-
ton coach Jeff Shore noted.
They did a good job of just
pushing off the line. We tried
to stay low and we would
hold them for a couple plays,
but then they would spring
some good runs on us. They
did to us what we like to do to
people ourselves and the bot-
tom line is that we just could
not get it done.

ley have come to learn from
their father Carl, a 1995 grad-
uate of Camdenton, it is that
you simply have to be tough.
