MODULE TITLE: Disaster Readiness and Risk Reduction

ASSESSMENT TOPIC/S: Hydrometeorological Hazards Part 1

NAME: SECTION:
TEACHER: DATE:

The climate of the Philippines is tropical and is strongly affected by monsoon (rain-bearing) winds, which
blow from the southwest from approximately May to October and from the northeast from November to
February. From June to December, an average of twenty typhoons hits the country accompanied by strong
winds, intense rainfall and flooding. Five to seven of which are expected to be destructive. This type of hazard is
known as hydrometeorological hazards. Hydrometeorological hazards are processes which involve the
interaction of the atmosphere, bodies of water, and land and which pose threat to lives and human property. It is
important to know how, when and where these hydrometeorological events operate because these occur more
frequently and sometimes have even more far-reaching negative effects on the economy, the environment, and
society as compared to any other type of natural disaster.

TASK I. PREPARATION OF MATERIAL

Each group must prepare the following before the actual day of the activity:
Laptop and Ipad
Laboratory Activity Handout
Prelab Output

TASK II. PROCEDURES

1. For 10 minutes, discuss with your groupmates the statement of the problem as well as the hypothesis that
the group must address at the end of this activity.

2. After 10 minutes, the class will now proceed to the next task which is the online simulation game activity.

3. Open the task using the link: http://www.stopdisastersgame.org/en/playgame.html. This is an online

simulation game. The first simulation task that we will try to manipulate is hurricane. You will be given ample
time to learn the simulation activity. Your role in this game is to plan and construct a safer environment for your
population. You must assess the disaster risk and try to limit the damage when natural hazard strike. Select the
easy level first for your first attempt. Your second attempt will be the medium level. The final attempt to be
submitted will be the difficult level. You are not allowed to play the difficult level twice. Screen shot the
mission report of the final level. This will be part of your data to be submitted. If you are already sure of your
strategies after the easy level, you may proceed right away to the difficult level. All the groups must accomplish
this table at the end of the activity.

3. Analyze and evaluate the result of your simulation activity
4. Identify the highest and lowest injured, casualties and cost of damage. Analyze the result of the activity using
the guide questions below.

Guide Questions:
1. Is your strategy for your location successful or not based from the mission report? What areas were you not
able to accomplish in the mission given? Why?

2. Compare your result with the lowest number of casualties, injured as well as the cost of damage. What do
you think are their strategies to get that result?

3. How does the expenditures influenced the number of casualties and injured as well as the cost of damage?

4. Who is the top scorer of this activity? Why do you think their output in this mission is very successful?

5. How important is the pre-disaster planning and how did it influence the after math of each disaster? Explain.

Task III. Output

The expected outputs of this activity are the following:
E. Data and Analysis
Examine your data, explain why they occurred, and interpret what they mean in relation to the objectives. Check your
data against your hypothesis and find out whether it is supported or contradicted. Cite scientific concepts, laws, or
principles to explain your data. You may construct a graph to show the relationship among the data obtained.
F. Conclusion
Write a generalization based on what you have discovered and learned in the experiment. Check if the objectives of
the experiment have been answered and explain. Summarize the key points that support your learnings.
G. Reference/ Bibliography
List a complete attribution from online resources, with date, authors name and publication in A.P.A format.

Your output is a computerized laboratory report with the following format:

Short bond paper (8.5 x 11)
Font style Arial
Font Size 12
Spacing 1.5
Indentation 1 inch all sides (APA format)
References APA format
Use the following links as a guide on how to write references in APA format
o http://www.bibme.org/citation-guide/apa/
o https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/560/01/
Submission will be online through google classroom.
File Name should be in this format:
o Section-FamilyName-FirstName-Lab. Act. No. Title of the Lab.
o Ex: 11A-Noche-Vince-Lab. Act. No.1 Timeline of Philippine Major Disasters Part 2
Same rules apply to those students who will submit a late output. Your papers will be returned without
checking if you will not follow the format including the file name. You may edit your file and resubmit.
