ASSESSMENT TOPIC/S: Hydrometeorological Hazards Part 1

Background of the Experiment:

The Philippines is situated at the West of the Pacific ocean, and is lying within its typhoon belt which
means that the country is prone to many destructive typhoons. These typhoons cause many problems
to the country because as it passes over the Philippines, it leaves a trail of destruction (destroyed
infrastructures, broken families, etc.) Many hazards come with this typhoon and it's not just the heavy
rain and the strong winds. More hazards come with those as some of them are the reason of why they
happen.

Statement of the Problem:

General:

What is the most effective way of mitigating and assuring that the number of casualties,
cost of damage, and injured is as low as possible?

Specific:

1. What are the different hazards under the umbrella of hydrometeorological hazards?

2. What could possibly make a hydrometeorological hazard stronger or weaker in nature?

3. What are important factors in mitigating the effects of these hydrometeorological

hazards?

Hypothesis:

Housing is a more important factor in relation to reducing the negative effects of hydrometeorological
rather than Defenses.

Group 8s strategy for the location was not successful, because as seen in their data, they have the
most number of injured civilians as well as the second most number of casualties. Among all 8 groups,
the one with least amount of casualties and cost of damage is the 3rd or the 5th group. Their
strategies were probably excellently planned and well placed, which means that everything was
thoroughly thought of. As seen in the data, most of the groups that had lesser cost of damage, lesser
casualties and injuries, had spent more of their money on housing than defenses. Among the 8
groups, the highest scorer of the activity is Group 5. They had no casualties, few people injured and
had a low cost of damage, as well as being able to pass their mission. A plausible reason to this result
would be having a proper strategy in doing their pre-disaster planning. Another would be that they all
had the right safety measurements during their activity. Every pre-disaster planning is important and
vital for the outcome of each disastrous phenomenon. Certainly the preparation for these events are
supposedly a series of complex and strategic processes that are supposed to keep the people safe
and free from these catastrophes. If the pre-disaster planning was taken with less priority therefore the
aftermath of the disaster would be devastating, and if with more taken with more intent and
importance, then the result would be a much more successful outcome.
