Lesson: Vocabulary

1.2 Standards
Standard - CC.1.2.8.J Acquire and use accurately grade-appropriate general academic and domain-
specific words and phrases; gather vocabulary knowledge when considering a word or phrase important to
comprehension or expression.
Standard - CC.1.2.8.K Determine or clarify the meaning of unknown and multiple-meaning words and
phrases based on grade-level reading and content, choosing flexibly from a range of strategies and tools.
Formative: Throughout the lesson the students will be rating themselves on how well they understand each
vocabulary word. This gives the teacher a very good understanding of the background knowledge the
students have on this topic and the words being used.
Summative: The students will hand in their workbooks after they have completed them on the vocabulary
words learned that day. This will show if the students have a better understanding of the words compared to
the beginning of the class.

1.6 Procedures
Now that we have gone through all of the words lets go through them.
The teacher will read aloud each word one at a time again. This time the teacher will ask the student(s)
who had put 3 fingers in the air to explain the meaning of the word.
If none of the students put 3 fingers in the air, then the teacher will ask the students who put 2 fingers in
the air to share where they have heard this word before and what they think it means.
If the students put one finger in the air then the teacher will explain the meaning of the word and read
the example sentence in the textbook.
No matter how many fingers the students put in the air, after the small group discussions about the
students background knowledge of each word the teacher will read the definition of each word from the
textbook as well as ask the students if they can think of any synonyms or antonyms for the words. The
teacher will also read the sentences that the textbook has for each word.
o Agree: When you agree with someone, you have the same ideas. A handshake shows that people
agree to something. Antonym: disagree
o Community: A community is a place where people live, work, and carry out their daily lives. This
community has an outdoor market. Synonyms: neighborhood, town
o Familiar: something that is familiar is already known. The man was happy to see a familiar face
at the party. Antonym: unfamiliar
o Festival: A festival is a special event or party. Dancers perform at the festival. Synonyms:
celebration, fiesta
o Native: something that belongs to you because of where you were born is native to you. People
wave flags from their native countries.
o Neighborhood: A neighborhood is a place where people live and work together. This
neighborhood is in Boston. Synonym: community
o Population: population means the number of people who live somewhere. Many people live in
New York City. It has a large population.
o Tradition: a tradition is an activity or belief that people share for many years. It is a tradition for
this family to celebrate Kwanzaa every December. Synonym: custom
The teacher will then read the questions from the text that go along with the vocabulary words. Each
student will be asked each question and the students will share their responses orally.
Do you agree that summer is the best season?
Which is a synonym for community? Neighborhood or farm?
Do you like to eat familiar foods or try new foods?
Whats your favorite festival?
If a plant is native to a place, is it from that place?
Describe your neighborhood.
Which place has a large population?
Describe a family tradition.
Independent Practice:
The students will then open their workbooks and complete the workbook pages 19-20 for the vocabulary
words.
The workbook includes: the rating for each word, they must check the correct box for the correct
definition of the word, and lastly they will answer a question/finish a sentence using the word.
The students will then hand in their workbooks when they are finished.
1.7 Differentiation
This lesson was differentiated for the students by meeting all the types of learners needs. The students heard
the vocabulary words aloud as well as saw them in the textbook. The words were then discussed together as
a class with participation from each student. The discussion involved the meaning of the word, examples of
how the word is used in a sentence, as well as synonyms and antonyms for each word.
To help the English Language Learners, when discussing each word, the questions asked are relatable to the
students own lives. For example, if one of the words is Tradition then the students will be asked to share
one tradition they celebrate.
1.8 Closure
We will now go over each others workbooks. Everyone exchange your workbook with someone else so
you do not have your own.
The students will now go around and read the sentences they wrote in their workbooks.
