Test type: progress/achievement test.

The test is designed to measure the students language and skill progress in relation to the
syllabus they have been following. The test contains items that the students are familiar with, i.e. they
had worked items with a similar structure before. It was taken at the end of a module (units 5 and 6 of
English Scrapbook textbook).

The test consists of seven items, both direct and indirect, in order to provide conclusive results
and an honest appreciation of the students knowledge. Thus, the first five items are indirect items,
attempting to measure the students knowledge and ability by getting at what lies beneath their receptive
and productive skills. They involve the correct use of grammar (exercise 1 relative pronouns, exercise
2 the use of the definite articles, exercise 4 modal verbs, exercise 5 reported speech) and the
appropriate use of vocabulary (exercise 3 movie types). The direct items of the test involve performing
the communicative skill of writing (about a famous person to whom they should identify) and the
receptive skill of reading (checking general understanding). The exercises fall in the same categories as
far as discrete-point test items (exercises 1-5) and integrative items (exercises 6 and 7) are concerned.

Test objectives:

O1: to measure Ss ability to use relative pronouns;

O2: to measure Ss ability to use definite articles;

O3: to measure Ss ability to identify vocabulary related to movie types;

O4: to measure Ss ability to use modal verbs expressing possibility and certainty;

O5: to measure Ss ability to makereported speech transformations;

O6: to measure Ss understanding of the text;

O7: to measure Ss ability to describe a person.

Results interpretation:

Following the process of test correcting and grading, it can be concluded that:

Most of the students are able to identify movie types properly;

Most of the students are able to properly use the definite articles;
Most of the students are able to properly use the relative pronouns for people, objects and introducing
reasons;

Some of the students are not able to distinguish between modals of certainty and of possibility;
Some of the students did not transform the adverbs and pronouns required by the reported speech
pattern;
Most of the students did not respect the low word limit.

Of all items, exercise 7 proved to be the most difficult to approach by the students. Most of the
students wrote a little over 50 words or did not even reach the low limit. This indicates the fact that the
students need more practise with the productive skills, which can be obtained both in the classroom and
at home, as homework based on writing tasks covered at school.

Remedy plan:

The teacher will approach the students with various writing tasks, which will be tackled
gradually, once having taught several writing techniques. Written production tasks will be included more
and will cover more time in the following lessons. In addition to this, during the next lessons, short tasks
involving the use of tenses and of modals will also be included and the students performance will be
monitored.
