NARRATIVE REPORT ON THE 22nd PHICS ANNUAL CONVENTION

On the first day, Dr. Hartigon-Go (DOH Undersecretary) started the

convention with his keynote address regarding the current fight against
healthcare-associated infections in the country. The first plenary session
highlighted the issues concerning rational use of Antibiotics, with the speaker
holding an oath for everyone in attendance to use antibiotics carefully and
rationally. Next was an enlightening session regarding infection control
practices in an endoscopy unit. Following this, a luncheon symposium was
held, with Ms. Patricia Ching (Infection Control Nurse Adviser, Hongkong
Baptist Hospital) regarding infection prevention and control in the Operating
Room Theatre. The first interactive session of the convention followed, which
was a Q&A forum with experts on the panel. A lecture regarding the creation
and importance of a hospitals antibiogram succeeded the interactive
session. Afterwards, the first business meeting for the PHICS members
ensued. The day was wrapped with a symposium regarding the experience of
the infection control officers from Emerging/Re-emerging Infectious Diseases
(EREID) referral hospitals.

The final day of the convention started with a session regarding the
disinfection and distribution of water supply in the Philippines and its impact
infection prevention and control. A brief lecture on vaccine-preventable
infections followed. The next session involved the scientific approaches on
cleaning and disinfection, shared by Mr. Ram Singh the CEO of Amity
International UK. The first PHICS Knockouts then ensued a quiz bee
focusing on infection prevention and control. The luncheon symposium
followed, which consisted of two parts: the first was a session regarding
medical waste disposal and the second was a short lecture on infection
control monitoring. After this, a panel discussion regarding practices
regarding food safety and hygiene commenced, with many questions geared
in infection prevention and control of food-borne diseases. Then came the
much awaited Grand PHICS Q&A Session, which answered every concerns
and questions of the participants regarding the practice of infection
prevention and control. The second business meeting was done afterwards,
then the closing remarks.
