SPECIALTY BRICKS NOW ADORN

MARY SCOTT NATURE PARK
By Jenn Sedlack

Thanks to the generosity of friends and neighbors of

Mary Scott Nature Park (MSNP), a new area of engraved
bricks was installed in the park in August 2015. The park
sold personalized bricks in an effort to raise matching funds
for a $10,000 Park Pride grant. Twenty-four bricks were
sold and have now been placed with other bricks in front
of the kiosk near the entrance to the park. The engravings
include memorials to loved ones and pets who have passed
on, names of families in the area, and names of local clubs
and associations. The funds that were raised were used to
continue the publicly-determined Master Plan for the park,
which includes the control of invasive plants, installing
fencing, and planting native plants. The Friends of MSNP
are grateful for everyone who supported this project.

DONATES TO NORTHLAKE LIBRARY
The Board of the Northlake Community Alliance, Inc. (NCA) voted in May to dissolve its non-profit corporation
at the end of June 2015 after a successful 15-year effort to beautify and improve the business area of Northlake. State
law requires that remaining funds and other assets should be donated to similar non-profit corporations. The NCA
Board voted unanimously to donate their remaining funds to the Friends of Northlake Library, Inc., (FONL) and to
donate their office furniture to the Metro Atlanta Furniture Bank, Inc.

HIP ACADEMY SONG IS CREATED BY STUDENTS
A group of Hawthorne students have been writing and performing an original song to serve two purposes. The first
purpose of the song is to honor the teachers and students of the HIP Academy and to let them know that we believe
that they can change the world. The second purpose of the song is to help promote awareness of this great school
so that interested parties learn more about this progressive school in rural Kenya. This song and dance should be
complete before the winter break and will be posted on social media
In these pictures below, the students are working on the choreography for their song and enjoying organizing their

A new campaign will start soon to invite other schools to help support the operating and expansion expenses of the HIP
Academy. Below is the design for the launch. If you know a school or community organization that wants to get involved in this

neighbors and two dogs showed up! We enjoyed chips, salsa, lemonade, appetizers and lots of brownies.
We also collected new email addresses for our neighborhood alerts, passed out safety information, and
became re-acquainted with our neighbors. The kids had fun with sidewalk chalk, bowling, and jump
rope, and we raffled six door prizes for everyone who joined our watch list. The photo shows most of the
people who attended.

NEW DEKALB RESIDENTIAL GARBAGE

AND RECYCLING PROCEDURE (CONDENSED)
The DeKalb County Sanitation Division announced that, as of October 19th, it will no longer service
third-party or customer-provided garbage or recycling containers. Only county-issued garbage roll carts
and recycling containers will be serviced. Residents not in compliance after October 19th will be issued
a notice. Customers who do not have a county-issued garbage roll cart or would like to join the recycling
program and obtain a county-issued 18-gallon recycling bin should contact the Sanitation Divisions
customer service team at 404-294-2900 or sanitation@dekalbcountyga.gov.Third-party or customer-
provided yard trimmings containers will still be serviced. Secure, durable plastic bags for excess garbage
disposal will be permitted with the new procedure if county-issued garbage roll carts are inadequate to
meet customers garbage disposal needs.
Phase II of the new program will focus on recycling and is expected to begin in early November.
Recycling roll carts with a 65-gallon capacity will be available during Phase II for a one-time $15 fee.

UPDATE from DeKalb Sanitation on November 9, 2015:

We apologize we are not able to exchange or provide additional carts at this time, but the division will
accept requests for smaller roll-carts, additional roll carts, and larger recycling carts on a case by case
basis and cart availability during the 2nd phase of the schedule change, which should start late-December
2015. Residents who want a different size roll-cart or larger cart for recycling will be required to submit an
application that will be available on line mid-December. To get the larger 65 gallon roll cart for recycling,
you will be required to complete and submit an application and a prepayment fee of $15.00 prior to the
delivery of the roll cart. Those residents who desire a second roll cart will be required to participate in the
Curbside Recycling Program and prepay a one-time fee of $15.00 for the additional cart; they also will
see an increase in the Sanitation Assessment fee from $265 to $350 per year.
