Brief Description
A constant balance is required between the ever-
changing, fast developing field of new and enabling
technologies on the one hand and the ever-increasing
need for bandwidth as a result of new, sophisticated
customer demands together with organisational need for
convergence and streamlined network operations.

Ensure the Design and Optimisation of the Transmission Systems

within the Core, IP and Access networks in line with the business
requirements of MTN SA (required timelines, budget constraints and
quality standards). Manage the Self Provisioning initiative and
existing 3rd Party business relationships
Detailed Description
Strategy Development
Participate in the translation of the transmission strategy and
architecture into long range plans
Assist in understanding the capabilities and limitations of
new technologies, applying best practices when designing
the transmission network

Planning & Delivery

Translate high level plan to low level design, i.e. design and
optimise Access and Core Backbone Transmission Networks,
ensuring practicality and simplicity is achieved
Design guidelines for regional transmission resources
Maintain capacity and functionality requirements timeously
and ahead of traffic needs for Transmission network
Align with Radio, Core & IP designs
Evaluate and specify new Access and Core Backbone
Transmission Network Features
Ensure the transmission design and its implementation are
co-ordinated with those of radio and core
Identify geographical location for equipment to be installed
Request funding and issue request for purchasing (RfP) to
 vendor, verify bill of material and confirm order of equipment
and services
Ensure detailed designs for Core network growth and
evolution are comprehensive and can be directly
implemented
Verify configuration
Coordinate implementation by Core and Access
Implementation team and resolve any design issues
Ensure implementation of Transmission plans is carried out
fully with a smooth handover to Network Operations for
cutover and integration into the live network
Ensure that policies, procedures and quality standards are
adhered to in the design process
Network Optimisation & Performance
Ensure quality objectives are met and maintained
Ensure future proof transmission design to guarantee
deliverables are met according to customer requirements
both internal and external
Track and report on performance problems and performance
improvements on division level
Investigate performance issues and identify changes
required on division level
Review design and drive optimisation changes
Ensure review of design and drive optimisation changes
Provide high level support on the designed
network/technologies

Communication and co-ordination

Ensure communication of plans and integration of feedback
Prepare detailed design, implementation and integration
documentation for build and operations
Co-operate with and support of other network group
departments at all levels
Manage interfaces with other areas of the MTN business
outside of the transmission department as required for
successful strategy development, design and implementation
Provide high level planning support function and
representation (technical) for Transmission design
departments in MTN Group Operations

Financial Management
Continuously strive to identify and eliminate non-contributory
expenditure

Job Requirements

Education:
Minimum of 3 year Technical degree/diploma
Fluent in English

Experience:
Minimum of 3 years experience in Telecommunications, with
 experience in Transmission design and optimization
environment ; with experience in supervising others
Experience working in a medium organization

Training:

Transmission courses relating to Transmission DXX, SDH,

GSM etc
